Oil prices rise ahead of Fed chief speech

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices rose Friday as traders looked to a speech by Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke that might signal more help for the struggling U.S. economic recovery.

Benchmark crude for October delivery rose 2 cents in midday Bangkok time to $94.64 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 87 cents to finish at $94.62 on the Nymex on Thursday.

Investors will be listening to Bernanke's speech at an economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming later Friday for hints of additional steps to spur borrowing and spending in the U.S.

They are also anticipating the release of manufacturing data out of China this weekend. Worse-than-expected numbers could put pressure on Beijing for more stimulus measures to help revive growth in the world's No. 2 economy.

In other energy futures trading, heating oil rose less than a penny to $3.138 per gallon. Natural gas rose less than 1 cent to $2.754 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Gunstringer, Hydro Thunder, and Angry Birds among first Windows 8 games

Microsoft has revealed the first batch of Windows 8 games, which will be heading to Windows 8 tablets from October 26th.

Boot up your snazzy new Microsoft Surface this October, tap over to the pre-installed Windows 8 Xbox Games app, and you'll find some of the following games.

We've picked out some interesting new games below.

Scroll down to the bottom for the complete list of games that will soon hit tablets (and PCs and laptops) running Windows 8.

Gunstringer: Dead Man Running

gunstringer

We first saw The Gunstringer on Kinect, as a Wild West shootout game from Twisted Pixel. On Windows 8 tablets, it has been reborn as a freemium Temple Run-style endless-runner.

You'll race across a treacherous desert to hunt down and banish five villains to the underworld. Along the way, you'll scoop up Gold Coins which can be used to buy new kit, weapons, and power-ups to help you in your quest.

It has asynchronous multiplayer challenges, downloadable content, a proper story mode with finite levels, and your classic endless-runner mode.

Hydro Thunder Hurricane

hydro

Hydro Thunder Hurricane is a rocket-powered speedboat racer, which was first seen on Xbox Live Arcade. It's got dynamic splishy-splashy water, and 11 ever-changing tracks that feature tsunamis and other such hazards.

There are single-player races and championships, plus new Ringmaster and Gauntlet modes. You won't find an actual multiplayer mode, but you can compare times on the Xbox Live leaderboards.

Reckless Racing Ultimate

reckless

Pegged as the ultimate edition of smartphone racer Reckless Racing, this one has even more cars and trucks, more single-player and multiplayer events, and loads more tracks to race on.

If it's anything like Reckless Racing 2, though, getting to grips with the physics-led handling will be a tricky prospect.

Like numbers? This game's got 24 customisable cars and trucks; 20 Career mode cups; 50 Arcade challenges; and 150 individual and customisable events. That's a lot of numbers.

Rocket Riot 3D

rocket

Just like the iOS and XBLA games of the same name, this is a barmy head-to-head brawler, featuring jetpacks and rockets.

Best of all, the pixellated backgrounds are completely destructible, so your explosives will literally tear chunks out of walls and ceilings.

The game has got a ridiculously large roster of characters, including zombies, robots, bananas, pirates, and moose. Mooses? Mice? It also has over 100 missions to play through (24 of which are exclusive to Windows 8) and multiplayer.

And the rest...

The World's Not Flat! | Big Island Weekly

Stoke Stories

By Leona Roberts

With nary a wave in sight from out of the south for Big Island shores, storms along the Antarctic Sheet down under New Zealand, generated swells after the first week of August. The energy, ran up the west coast of South America and into the California swell-window. Those northeastward bound south-swells left Hawaii empty handed but arrived at Oceanside California in time to grace the 36th Annual World Bodysurfing Championships with contestable waves for August 18 and 19, 2012.

In spite of its bad rap for being flat and more of a swimming event, the ?World?s? had been far better attended during previous years, running a phenomenal 400 to 500 + participants, grouped into over a dozen age and gender divisions. With 15 minute heats running constantly at both sides of the pier, the sounding of the horn simultaneously signifies the ending of the heat in the water and the beginning of the next heat. With the clock already ticking, fresh contestants promptly dash from shore, past the heat-completed bodysurfers, into the newly vacated contest lineup and commence to ride waves.

The two sets of judging panels on shore are comprised of previous championship bodysurfers and legendary riders. Keeping track of who, what, where, when, how many, etc., while sets are pouring in is a monumental challenge on its own. Constant conferring with one another and with the ?spotters,? extra eyes with equally honorable credentials, keeps the judges constantly locked in and intensely focused in order to keep track and not miss scoring anyone?s moves. Burn-out is somewhat alleviated by a steady go-round of judges taking leave while another returns to duty, only at the ending of a division in order to keep scoring as fair as possible. MC?s pass on information as the contest progresses and keep the galleries amused.

Increased radiation, expensive airfares, inflated gas prices and a stagnant job market claimed the blame as less than 250 entrants participated in 3-6 foot surf this year. Over 200 of California?s finest were joined by several bodysurfeurs from France, a surfe de peito lady from Brazil, a dash of bodysliders from the East Coast, a few more North Americans from various lands and a handful of kaha nalu riders from Oahu. The event held true to form and generated the legendary bodysurfing camaraderie that the sport is known for. Congratulations to the Grand Champion Man, Tim Casinelli, the Grand Champion Woman, Calla Alison and to all who attended. Complete results at: www.worldbodysurfing.org.

August seemed to connected me with more interesting Big Island women than any other month this year. Retiring from home brew judging several years ago hasn?t altered my taste for craft beer. I was stoked to attend a Big Island Ladies Of Craft Beer tasting at Kona Brewing and don?t want to miss their next get together. facebook.com/home.php#!/BigIslandLadiesOfCraftBeer.

The beers were top notch and I was in great company. During the raffle, I scored a lovely and comfortable yoga top from primalartistryhi.com.

Historically, women have been very important concerning beer. In centuries gone by while the general purity of water was very seldom reliable, drinking beer, wine and other brewed or alcoholic beverages was part of everyday life, mostly because they were far safer to drink than water.

The primary brewers during the ?Middle Ages? were women. After Europeans began migrating to the ?New World? of North America, women skilled in the art of homebrewing made the most highly desirable brides. A woman?s brewing savvy ensured her family?s health and well being. Recent economics and health concerns following decades of undisclosed use of harmful chemicals that were declared to be safe by their bottom-line-driven producers seems to be providing encouragement for the comeback of many things from the past, including gardening, the crafting of food and beverages at home, cottage industries, microbrewing and more.

The Big Island is fortunate to be home to several excellent microbreweries, Big Island Brewhaus in Waimea, Kona Brewing Company in Kailua-Kona and Mehana Brewing in Hilo. Local exposure to high quality beer has led to increased interest in home brewing on the Big Island. If you or your spouse enjoy craft beer, home brewing can be rewarding on many levels.

Local homebrewing suppliers such as www.rocketsuds.com, local homebrewing clubs and the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) have everything to transform the enigma of fermentation into liquid aloha. The Association of Brewers (AOB), a not-for-profit educational and trade association for small and craft brewers is also a great resource. AOB?s mission: to make quality beer and brewing knowledge accessible to all. Their website: www.beertown.org.

Point Pleasant on the New Jersey shore of North America?s Atlantic Coast is hosting the SCION JENKS, USBA, United States Bodyboarding Association National Tour?s champion-deciding event, September 1 through September 10, 2012. With hurricanes sweetening the surf, this event could be quite the bout.

Major contenders include the USBA?s top two highest ranking bodyboarders, Hawaii?s Hubbard brothers, Jeff and Dave. Da braddahs from Kauai will be competing against each other and the ranks for the Men?s US National Pro Championship Title.

Young Sammy Morrentino, also from Kauai, who recently swooped and scooped the Sandy Beach Pro-division away from his Pro-elders while competing as an amateur will also be testing the local New Jersey beach break masters in their own waters.

Two times USBA Women?s Champion, Roberta Bitzer was leading into the last event. However, after competing this July as an amateur and advancing to pull Second Place away from the wahine Pros at Sandy Beach, Big Island?s own Liana Carson from Kona is going Pro for her first mainland contest appearance at the SCION Jenk?s Pro. Go Liana! For updates, schedule information and to watch the mysteries of the bodyboarding tour unfold live, go to www.usbatour.com.

Longoria's 2 HRs helps Rays pop Rangers

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:28 p.m. ET Aug. 29, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Evan Longoria homered twice, Tampa Bay roughed up Matt Harrison and the Rays beat the Texas Rangers 8-4 Wednesday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

After dropping the last two against the AL-West leading Rangers by one run, the Rays avoided the three-game sweep.

Harrison (15-8) allowed seven runs and 12 hits in 5 1-3 innings. He took a no-hitter into the seventh and permitted two hits in eight shutout innings in his last outing Friday night against Minnesota.

Tampa Bay had scored only 11 runs during their losing skid before breaking out for 16 hits against Texas.

Longoria hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the ninth. B.J. Upton had a three-run home run and Elliot Johnson added a solo blast.

Jeff Keppinger went 4 for 5 and Ben Zobrist had three hits for the Rays.

Jake McGee (5-2) pitched a perfect sixth and five Tampa Bay relievers combined for 4 1-3 scoreless innings.

Josh Hamilton hit his 36th home run for Texas, a solo shot that brought Texas within 6-4 in the fifth.

The Rangers wrapped up a 10-game homestand with a 7-3 record.

Harrison gave up seven runs and a career-high 14 hits in an 8-4 loss to the Rays on April 27. The All-Star left-hander struggled again against Tampa Bay on Wednesday night, giving up six runs and a pair of home runs by the second inning.

Zobrist's RBI double in the first snapped a 13-inning scoreless drought.

Longoria drove a 3-1 fastball from Harrison 409 feet to center. The two-run shot extended Tampa Bay's lead to 3-0. Longoria is 6 for 9 with three home runs against Harrison in the regular season.

In the second inning, Sam Fuld tripled with one out and Desmond Jennings walked to set the stage for Upton.

After Texas pitching coach Mike Maddux visited Harrison, Upton lined a fastball into the seats in left for his 16th home run of the season.

Johnson led off the sixth with a home run and Harrison was chased out of the game two batters later.

It was the first time Harrison allowed three home runs in a game since April 21, 2010 against Boston.

Texas' Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer in the second, his 15th of the season. Nelson Cruz's RBI groundout got the Rangers to within 6-3.

Hamilton's 424-foot shot landed in the upper deck in right and gave him 112 RBIs, which leads the majors.

Rays starter Alex Cobb allowed eight hits and four runs in 4 2-3 innings.

Notes: Tampa Bay OF Matt Joyce, who left Tuesday's night's game with a strained left forearm, was not in the lineup. Manager Joe Maddon said Joyce might be available Thursday night at Toronto. ... Cruz was in the lineup after being hit in the left elbow Tuesday night. ... The Rays are 15-7 since Longoria came off the disabled list Aug. 7.

Asian markets fall on signs of fading growth

BEIJING (AP) ? Asian markets fell Friday as disappointment over weak economic indicators from the United States, China and Europe offset hopes for more stimulus from central banks.

Oil fell below $96 a barrel after a member of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policymaking board dampened hopes for additional stimulus.

Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 1.2 percent to 9,070.76 and China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 1 percent to 2,090.81. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.2 percent to 19,898.43.

Traders were dismayed by U.S. data showing the number of people seeking unemployment assistance rose for a second straight week.

Markets rose Wednesday after minutes of the Federal Reserve's last policy meeting showed bankers favored more stimulus. But they fell Thursday after the president of the St. Louis Fed said officials were considering new data that might make further action unnecessary.

"There now once again appears to be a state of confusion as to what the market can expect from the Fed at its next meeting in mid-September," analyst Cameron Peacock of Australia's IG Markets said in a report.

Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea's Kospi declined 1.2 percent to 1,919.81, while Australia's S&P ASX 200 was off 0.8 percent at 4,349.

In China, a survey found manufacturing activity weakened in August despite repeated government stimulus efforts. HSBC Corp. said Thursday the preliminary version of its purchasing managers' index fell to a nine-month low of 47.8 on a scale on which numbers below 50 indicate a contraction. New export orders fell at their fastest rate in three years.

Beijing cut interest rates twice in June and is pumping money into the economy through high spending on public works. Several major cities have announced multibillion-dollar spending plans but analysts expect major initiatives to be put off until after a new Communist Party leadership is installed this fall.

U.S. new home sales rose 3.6 percent in July, but DBS Group said that only offset a drop of identical size the previous month.

Aside from improved employment and retail sales in July, "the data has been unchanged or slightly worse," DBS Group economists said in a report.

In Europe, the PMI of overall economic activity in the 17-country eurozone was at 46.6 points in August, up only slightly from July's 46.5.

Analysts said the number shows the eurozone is firmly in recession, which will hurt efforts to reduce debt and boost investor confidence. Any improvement is likely to depend on governments and central banks doing more to reform their economies and boost demand.

The European Central Bank is expected to present in coming weeks a plan to help indebted countries such as Spain and Italy by buying their government bonds.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will travel to Germany on Friday to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel, and to France on Saturday for talks with President Francois Hollande.

Samaris is asking that Greece be given more time to meet deficit targets and implement reforms. Germany's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, poured cold water on that idea, saying more time would not solve Greece's problems.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2542 from $1.2566 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 78.60 yen from 78.47 yen.

Benchmark oil for October delivery fell 67 cents to $95.60 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 99 cents to finish at $96.27 per barrel.

Say It Ain?t So, Joes

Joe Paterno Joe Posnanski has written a biography of disgraced Penn State coach Joe Paterno

Photograph by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images.

Joe Posnanski?s first book was The Soul of Baseball, the tale of a road trip with the charming, nonagenarian Negro League star Buck O?Neil. His second was a fun-loving romp with the Cincinnati Reds of the 1970s, baseball?s Big Red Machine. In March 2011,?Posnanski announced?to the devoted readers of his excellent blog that he would be writing a third. ?This time around,? he said, ?I really wanted to go for everything, I wanted to take on the project of my life, something that would get at how I feel about sports and life and competition and fairness and unfairness and the world around us.?

The subject: Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. Posnanski didn?t hide his reverence for the gruff, diminutive coach in rolled-up khakis and oversized black glasses. He said in the blog post that he was a ?huge fan and admirer of Joe?s??he referenced the?flattering?stories?he had written about the coach?and ?endlessly fascinated by him and his lifelong quest to do something large, to impact America, through football.? In his proposal, Posnanski said the book would be??the most amazing football story ever told.??Simon & Schuster paid a reported $750,000 to publish it.

The then-Sports Illustrated?writer moved to State College, Pa., to follow the eightysomething Paterno during what was likely to be the final season of a six-decade-long career, and what turned out to be the final months of his life. Posnanski was granted access to Paterno and his program, his family, and his personal papers. If the writer viewed the coach as one of the last heroic figures in sports, Paterno must have seen Posnanski as the rare reporter he could trust in a business he had long disdained. It was a good marriage: Posnanski liked writing?positive?stories about?good?people, and Paterno liked talking about the good he had accomplished.

I don?t think Posnanski is so naive that he would cling to a romantic ideal of a subject who turned out to more complicated than advertised?he might be the least cynical major sportswriter alive, but he isn?t stupid. And I don?t think Paterno?or his family and friends were devious enough, or skilled enough, to orchestrate a campaign to manipulate the coach?s Boswell, before or after the horrific charges of child molestation against Paterno?s longtime defensive lieutenant, Jerry Sandusky. So why, then, does?Paterno?read like a one-source story, a writer?s attempt to prop up the Potemkin village of his subject?s life?

Paterno?has been?savaged?by some reviewers, including?JoePa?s hometown paper, mainly because Posnanski doesn?t seem to try to report or explain the Sandusky story beyond what he witnessed and was told by Paterno and his inner circle. Posnanski allows the coach?s associates to make a range of excuses for Paterno?s failure to more assertively pursue direct reports, including one from a young assistant coach, Mike McQueary, that Sandusky had showered with boys and engaged in an act of ?a sexual nature? with one of them in Penn State?s football building in 1998 and 2001: He followed university guidelines, he was duped like everyone else, he was old and less in touch, he had other things on his mind. Posnanski reports this profoundly sad exchange between Paterno and his son Scott after the?grand jury presentment?against Sandusky was issued last November:

?Dad,? he asked his father again, ?did you know anything about Sandusky??

?Other than the thing Mike told me, no,? Joe answered.

?Nothing? No rumors? The coaches never talked about it??

?No. I don?t listen to rumors. Nothing.?

?Dad, this is really important. If there is anything you heard ...?

?I didn?t hear anything, why are you badgering me? What do I know about Jerry Sandusky? I?ve got Nebraska to think about, I can?t worry about this.? Nebraska was the next game.

For the sake of history, it?s good that Posnanski was admitted to the coach?s inner sanctum. What?s missing from?Paterno, though, is a rigorous examination of the other side of the story. In one instance, Posnanski uses anonymous quotes to discredit a former Penn State administrator named Vicky Triponey, with whom Paterno clashed over player discipline. The author lets one embittered player call Triponey ?that woman,? but makes no apparent effort to interview her. Of Paterno?s firing by Penn State?s board of trustees, Posnanski writes: ?Why and how the board made its decision is not my story to tell.??

Military hits town near Damascus; 100 killed nationwide

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Troops and tanks swept into a town near Damascus on Thursday in an assault aimed at crushing opposition to President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's increasingly bloody civil war.

Artillery and helicopters hammered the Sunni Muslim town of Daraya, killing 25 people and wounding 200 over the last 48 hours, opposition sources said. Soldiers moved in and raided houses.

"Artillery is firing from Qasioun Mountain in regular bursts of heavy barrages. I wonder what is left of the town," said one woman watching the shelling from Damascus.

At least 100 people, including 59 civilians, died in violence across the country, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Some 200 were killed on Wednesday.

There was little resistance as Assad's forces pushed toward the center of Daraya on the southwest edge of Damascus. Armed rebels had apparently already left.

"They are using mortar bombs to clear each sector. Then they enter it, while moving towards the center," said Abu Zeid, an activist speaking by phone from near Daraya.

Assad's military had driven insurgents from most of the areas they seized in and around the capital after a bomb killed four top security officials on July 18. But rebels have crept back, regrouping without taking on the army in pitched battles.

Tanks and troops attacked the southwest Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya on Monday and Tuesday, killing 86 people, half of them in cold blood, according to Assad's opponents.

It is hard to verify such assertions due to state curbs on independent media. Syrian leaders say they are fighting "armed terrorists" backed by Western and Gulf Arab nations out to topple Assad for his resistance to Israel and the United States.

CHECHEN KILLED

Foreign fighters from Arab and other countries have joined Syrian rebels, possibly including Rustam Gelayev, son of a late Chechen rebel warlord in Russia's Caucasus region.

Russian media and websites sympathetic to Islamist insurgents in the Caucasus reported that Gelayev had been killed in Syria, with some saying he had been fighting against Assad.

Russia's Kommersant daily, however, cited a relative of Gelayev as saying he had been studying in Syria, had decided to leave due to the violence and was killed on his way to Turkey.

In Syria's largest city, Aleppo, tank shells crashed into buildings in the rebel-held Saif al-Dawla district, even as displaced civilians came back to check their houses or pick up abandoned belongings.

A man in a dirty T-shirt and tattered sandals, who gave his name as Mohammed, said his home was in the nearby neighborhood of Salaheddine, now back in army hands after days of fighting.

"Me and my two brothers and our families left to stay with friends. I left with what I'm wearing. We are four families in one house," he said, as shells landed a few hundred yards away. "Does the world care about Syrians? I think not."

Aleppo, a once-prosperous commercial hub, is living through desperate times, divided by war, its streets stinking with rubbish and residents uncertain whether to flee or stay.

Rebel-held areas are at the mercy of army tanks, planes and helicopter gunships, with civilians now caught up in a conflict which Aleppo had mostly avoided until a rebel offensive in July.

"Where are we to go? Yesterday they hit the rebel base across the road, but nowhere is safe in Aleppo. The planes bomb everywhere," said a carpenter who feared to give his name.

"If there is a safe place in Syria, tell me. We don't have the money to leave the country," the 53-year-old added.

YouTube footage showed a funeral in Daraya of a mother and five children from the al-Sheikh family. Activists said the victims were killed by shellfire in the town after fleeing this week's military offensive on the Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya.

The bodies were wrapped in white shrouds, the children's faces exposed. Mourners laid green branches on the corpses and cried: "There is no god but Allah, Assad is the enemy of Allah."

BRAHIMI'S MISSION

International diplomacy has failed to break the conflict in Syria, which the United Nations says has cost more than 18,000 lives since a popular uprising erupted in March 2011.

Outgoing U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has blamed splits in the U.N. Security Council, where Russia and China have repeatedly blocked Western efforts to ramp up pressure on Assad, for the failure of his peace mission.

Babacar Gaye, the head of U.N. monitors sent to observe an abortive ceasefire declared by Annan on April 12, was expected to leave Damascus on Thursday. The mission's mandate has expired and was not renewed due to the spiraling violence.

Annan's successor, veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, was flying to New York for a week of consultations at the United Nations, his spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said.

It is not clear how Brahimi can succeed where Annan failed, given the deadlock among big powers and the intractable conflict in Syria, where Assad's minority Alawite-based ruling system is pitted against mostly Sunni opponents.

The upheaval in Syria, at the heart of a volatile Middle East, is already spilling over into its neighbors.

Sporadic clashes between Sunnis and Alawites erupted for a fourth day in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli, breaching a truce agreed less than 24 hours earlier, after Sunni gunmen shot dead an Alawite man. Nine people were wounded in the fighting.

At least 13 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in Sunni-Alawite fighting in Lebanon this week that has been fuelled by sectarian tensions in Syria.

Ankara has grown alarmed at apparent links between Kurdish militants fighting in southeast Turkey and the conflict in Syria. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has accused Assad of backing Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters and says Turkey's military might act to counter any threat from the PKK in Syria.

Turkish and U.S. diplomats, intelligence and military officials held talks in Ankara on Thursday expected to touch on a possible buffer zone in Syria and steps to stop PKK militants in the border region from exploiting the chaos.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian suggested Western nations and allies could consider setting up a limited no-fly zone over part of Syria without a U.N. Security Council mandate.

It was the first time Paris has talked of intervention by an "international coalition" rather than by the U.N.

"The scenario mentioned by (U.S. Secretary of State) Hillary Clinton of a particular zone where there could be a banned area is something that needs to be studied," Le Drian said.

Get The Right MMA Gloves For You

MMA is a contact sport where all movements have to be done using the hands and feet. The two types of MMA gloves are used when training or when competing. The first type is the one you normally see boxers wear. It is used during training in the sport. Students are advised to work on their hand techniques that's why they opt to use the 160z boxing gloves during training sessions. You would also find that there is more weight in the boxing gloves than the official gloves used in MMA. The boxing gloves are used to improve the hands sensitivity once there is no more weight put on them.

The other type is the preferred option in a duel. Training can also be done using the official MMA gloves although you shouldn't rely on it too much if you are intent on working on your hand striking skills. Boxing gloves are limited to punches being thrown. If you use MMA gloves, you can grapple with the opponent. The reason MMA gloves are open is to allow more freedom of movement in the hands. Whether you are training or engaged in a duel, you have to invest in gloves that are of superior quality. It is very rare, indeed, if you are able to find a high-quality pair of gloves at an affordable and cheap price. Substandard gloves will only give elevate the chances or harm during training or when in a duel; hence, the need to get original gloves for the sport.

Leather MMA gloves with an open design is the glove of choice of amateurs who are still practicing the art. The knuckles of the gloves may have certain colours that indicate the parts of the hand for striking. They could also be padded in one way or another to provide protection for the fingers. If you find some cheap MMA gloves with padding on them, do not immediately think they are the best choice for use. But if you are only starting out in your training, you could use them first until such time that you can move on to better professional MMA gloves. Make sure that the gloves have firm closure around the wrist. This would make grappling and striking easier.

If you are looking for high-quality MMA gloves, you could start looking in the internet. You could conduct a search and you will find out all sorts of things you need to know about gloves and other gears necessary for the successful practice of MMA. You can find the gloves in many online stores, particularly the sports-oriented ones. Ensure you read reviews on the sites about the various brands of MMA gloves on sell before you decide to buy. Do not settle for a pair of gloves that will do for the moment. Look for something that is quality enough to last you a long time.

(AP) ? After 18 years of negotiation, Russia on Wednesday entered the World Trade Organization, which restricts import duties and subsidies in an attempt to create a level playing field for international trade.

Analysts and politicians hope that Russia, which has long proven a formidable market to foreign investors because of its byzantine bureaucracy and protectionist tariffs, would be transformed by its entry into the WTO. Russia is one of the last major global economies to enter the group, which has long included other developing nations like China.

While consumers here will benefit from the lower cost of imported goods, some worry that struggling industries long coddled by state subsidies, such as agriculture or the automobile industry, will suffer from foreign competition.

Russians often complain about the burdensome cost of Western-imported consumer products, which range from refrigerators to jeans. With its entry into the WTO, the country will cut its average import tariff by 5.9 percent, making those imports cheaper.

M. Video, one of Russia's largest electronics retailers whose shelves are packed with foreign-made CD players and American movies, said Russia's entry into the WTO would bring more customers into their stores.

"We believe that (entry into the WTO) is going to be a very good decision for our customers in the future, because they will be able to purchase goods with prices harmonized with other economies," said Enrique Fernandez, chief commercial officer of the company.

But uncompetitive domestic goods, which have long been propped up by Soviet-style subsidies, could be threatened by the invasion of higher-quality imports. Nearly 100 major business leaders and industry groups including dairy and meat producers signed a petition earlier this summer addressed to the ruling United Russia party, asking that its deputies vote against ratification of the WTO treaty.

Agriculture, the automobile industry, and Soviet-style "Monogorods," or towns which revolve around a single factory or industry, are bound to suffer next to foreign competition unless they can reform quickly. These industries are based in regions that have often displayed the most support for President Vladimir Putin, but could easily turn into a hotbed for protest if already fragile industries were to collapse.

At a car dealership in Moscow, 63-year-old engineer Alexei Tarakanov said he doubted that low-quality Russian cars could win on an open market.

"I already have a negative attitude towards our (Russian) cars," said Tarakanov, who was buying a Renault. "I doubt that they can win the preference of the modern buyer."

Because state-subsidized industries proved such a pivotal issue in Russia's WTO negotiations, financial aid to struggling sectors will be gradually phased out, rather than abruptly cut off, over the course of seven years.

"The industry will not collapse immediately, (major Russian car-maker) AvtoVaz is going to continue steadily producing its 700,000 cars per year," said Ovanes Oganisyan, an analyst at the Moscow-based investment bank Troika Dialog. "But eventually there's going to be more competition, and if AvtoVaz doesn't change in seven years it will have to go out of business."

In addition to the challenges faced by unreformed industries, the Russian government expects to take a short-term financial hit from the loss of income from import duties and taxes. But the government emphasizes long-term gains, and the World Bank has estimated that WTO membership could increase Russia's GDP by an extra 3.3 percent a year in the next three years.

While the WTO will significantly open up the Russian market to foreign producers, the U.S. faces the threat of paying higher tariff rates than other WTO members to sell goods in Russia, leaving American producers at a competitive disadvantage compared to European or Asian industries.

The reason for the disparity is the Jackson-Vanik Amendment, a law passed by Congress during Soviet times that denies Russia normal trade relations with the U.S.

The U.S. president has been granting Russia annual waivers since 1992, but Moscow insists it will not lower its tariffs for the U.S. as much as for other countries until the law is scrapped.

"The last thing that America needs right now is for foreign companies to have lower tariff rates than American companies," said Andrew Somers, President and CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce.

Vice President Joe Biden lobbied for the repeal of Jackson-Vanik in 2011, as have previous presidential administrations, but Congress has so far proven intransigent to executive pleas.

Congress has increasingly taken fire at the Russian administration for its human rights record. In June, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Justice for Sergei Magnitsky Act, a bill named for a Russian lawyer who died in a Russian prison last year after allegedly being abused at the hands of Russian authorities.

This week, President Barack Obama expressed his disappointment after the three participants of Pussy Riot, a punk band who sang an anti-Putin prayer in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior, were convicted to two years in prison.

"Business hates uncertainty," said Somers, "If the Jackson-Vanik Amendment remains on the books and the U.S. continues not to have normal trade relations with Russia, who knows what will happen."

Epidemic of plain packaging to curb smoking uptake

Here's a potential epidemic worth celebrating. Australia's High Court has upheld 'plain packaging' legislation for cigarettes ? a move that some say will see the practice sweep through the world.

The legislation forces cigarette packages to carry prominent health warnings and a plain font over an olive green background ? logos would no longer be allowed.

"The ramifications really are immense," says Mike Daube at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. "There's a domino effect in tobacco control."

Daube says there will now be an "epidemic of plain packaging" across the globe. He says bans on smoking on flights seemed impossible but they spread once one airline took the plunge.

According to Jonathan Liberman, director of the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer in Melbourne, Australia, the decision will have a global impact. "[It shows] that all the tobacco companies' arguments came to naught and the world needs to consider the arguments in that light."

Whether that impact extends to the US remains to be seen. "The US is a unique situation," says Kevin Outterson of Boston University School of Law, who specialises in healthcare policy.

He says the US Supreme Court is "openly suspicious" of precedents set in other countries. Moreover, it has come to consider "commercial speech" as protected under the first amendment right to free speech.

"Many countries in Europe and elsewhere are proposing similar legislation and have been faced by similar claims that this is somehow an expropriation of the tobacco companies' intellectual property rights," says John Burman, senior legal adviser at Cancer Research UK.

He says the Australian decision can be cited in US and UK courts, and he thinks it is likely to have some influence.

Fox to distribute DreamWorks Animation movies

(AP) ? DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., the movie studio behind "Kung Fu Panda" and "Madagascar," said Monday that its films will be distributed by 20th Century Fox starting next year.

The five-year deal replaces an existing distribution agreement DreamWorks has with Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures.

DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said his company will continue to pay an 8 percent fee on gross sales in theatrical and home video markets, the same as its existing deal.

But its fee on such products as online movie rentals and movie downloads will drop to 6 percent as it benefits from the lower cost of delivering digital goods.

DreamWorks will also distribute its content to TV providers in the U.S. without paying a fee through a long-term deal with Netflix Inc.

"This deal is an absolute win-win," Katzenberg said on a conference call.

Distribution of DreamWorks films was up for grabs at the end of the year because of its pending split with Paramount, which is seeking to build its own lineup of animated movies.

Following last year's hit, "Rango," Paramount plans to move characters developed on its Nickelodeon channel for children onto the big screen. It is planning a "SpongeBob SquarePants" sequel and a movie based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

DreamWorks' animated titles will join those of News Corp.'s Fox. Its Blue Sky Studios produced the computer-animated hits "Ice Age" and "Rio."

Fox co-chairman Tom Rothman said that having one studio release both DreamWorks' and Fox's animated titles will help planning and give it some leverage with theater owners.

"It works very well to coordinate it," he said.

Standard & Poor's equity analyst Tuna Amobi said in a research note that the long-awaited distribution announcement "resolves a major near-term overhang," although he planned to examine the deal more closely.

Dreamworks shares rose 28 cents to $18 in after-hours trading. They closed down 13 cents at $17.72 in the regular session.

News Corp. shares fell 20 cents to close at $23.06.

Glencore posts 8 percent net profit drop in H1

(AP) ? Commodities trader Glencore International PLC, which is seeking to buy Anglo-Swiss mining group Xstrata PLC, reported an 8 percent drop in January-to-June net profits Tuesday amid falling prices for materials and global economic weakness.

Swiss-based Glencore , which supplies key raw materials such as oil, copper and wheat and owns plants, warehouses and mines, said its first-half net income attributable to shareholders fell to $2.275 billion, down from $2.474 billion in the comparable period of 2011.

It reported revenue of nearly $108 billion, a 17 percent increase from $92 billion in the first half a year ago.

The value of Glencore's stock dipped 1 percent to 350 pence ($5.49) at the start of trading on the London stock exchange.

In its financial statement posted before the start of trading, Glencore says its drop in profits was a result of sluggishness of the global economy caused by "the European sovereign debt crisis and corresponding softening growth outlooks in many developed and emerging economies."

Added to this "challenging backdrop" was a decline in average prices for many key commodities of between 14 and 28 percent, Glencore said, but that was offset in the first half by strong showings from metals, minerals and agriculture.

Its business model was showing "strength and resilience" for its diversification, sourcing of materials, marketing and logistics, the company added. It also highlighted its "abundant liquidity" in the billions of dollars spread across 100 banks globally and no material refinancing planned in the next 12 months.

"Looking forward, we neither anticipate nor assume any material improvement in overall market or economic conditions in the near term," said Chief Executive Ivan Glasenberg, who owns 15 percent shares in Glencore. "We will continue to diligently look to our own growth pipeline and end markets to maximize performance for our shareholders."

Glencore, the world's largest publicly traded supplier of raw materials, has been trying to persuade investors of the merits of a merger with Xstrata. The all-share deal would involve Xstrata investors swapping each of their shares for 2.8 newly issued Glencore shares. A shareholder vote is scheduled for Sept. 7.

The deal, expected to be completed in the fourth quarter, will create a combined company to be called Glencore Xstrata with a market value of $90 billion. The company would control a chain of businesses from mining to refining, storage and shipping of basic commodities like coal, copper and corn.

Glencore already holds a 34 percent stake in Xstrata but cannot vote its shares on the deal. But Qatar Holding, the government-backed investment fund, wants a higher price for its 11 percent stake in Xstrata and its position is crucial to the hopes of other Xstrata shareholders who are demanding improved terms.

The company made no mention of the deal in its statement Tuesday but did say it had incurred $1 million in selling and administrative expenses and anticipates $69 million of additional merger expenses.

Paltrow, Roberts, Swift set for cancer telethon

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An A-list cast of celebrities is joining a telethon to raise money and awareness to fight cancer.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Samuel L. Jackson and Emma Stone are among the stars participating in the third Stand Up to Cancer telethon, the organization announced Wednesday.

Paltrow also is an executive producer for the fundraiser that will be carried commercial-free from 8-9 p.m. EDT Sept. 7 on the four major broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, and more than a dozen cable channels.

Musical performances by Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Alicia Keys and Tim McGraw are planned, and more than 25 movie, TV and sports stars will be on hand to take phone pledges, said executive producer Joel Gallen.

Laura Ziskin, founder of Stand Up to Cancer and producer of its first two telethons in 2008 and 2010, lost her seven-year fight against breast cancer last year. The "Spider-Man" movie producer was 61.

Ziskin represents "tremendous shoes to fill," Gallen said. "I can't really replace Laura, but I'm coming from a different point of view, from a respectful point of view, and continuing the mission she was on."

Hope is the theme for this year's telethon, Gallen said. It will include information on how to prevent cancer and on the treatment research funded by Stand Up to Cancer, also known as SU2C.

The experiences of several patients who are part of Stand Up to Cancer trials will be explored in mini-documentaries that show the progress made in just a few years of effort, Gallen said.

The organization said it has awarded about $120 million in grant commitments to multidisciplinary research "Dream Teams" and to scientists seeking innovative approaches to end cancer's role as the world's leading cause of death.

Of the $180 million-plus that has been pledged, some larger donations are being made over a period of several years, a spokeswoman said.

Katie Couric, who joined with Ziskin and other women in the entertainment industry to found Stand Up to Cancer, will appear in the telethon. Others taking part include Jessica Biel, Jeremy Renner, Seth Rogan, Masi Oka, Simon Baker and Rashida Jones.

Couric lost her husband to colon cancer, while Paltrow's late father, director Bruce Paltrow, had oral cancer. Some participants, such as Michael Douglas, have fought the disease themselves.

Cable channels carrying the telethon are BIO, Encore, HBO, Showtime, HBO Latino, ION Television, LMN, Logo, MLB Network, mun2, Palladia, Starz, TBS, Smithsonian and VH1.

Stand Up To Cancer, which also receives corporate donations, is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a philanthropic arm of the TV and movie industries.

The American Association for Cancer Research is the scientific partner of Stand Up To Cancer and conducts scientific oversight of its research projects in conjunction with the SU2C advisory committee.

What Insurance Do You Need When You Travel?

GlobeIt?s been awhile since I?ve traveled outside the country, but I do like to take frequent trips in the United States. Whenever you travel, it?s a good idea to make sure that you are protected. This means that you need to have adequate insurance coverage.

There are different types of insurance coverage available for travelers, and you need to carefully consider your needs before deciding what will be required for your trip.

What Will You Be Doing?

First of all, figure out what you will be doing. The needs of someone who is whitewater rafting in South America, or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, are different from someone headed to Disney World. Figure out what you will be doing, and where you will be doing it. If you are engaging in adventure travel, you might need emergency medical evacuation coverage. On the other hand, if you are just enjoying a leisurely trip through New Zealand, what you already have might be sufficient for medical problems.

Also, consider your travel arrangements. Have you pre-paid for a specific tour? What happens if your flight is cancelled? Will you be renting a car? If you are paying a lot of money for your plans, trip cancellation insurance might be a good idea ? just in case. I rarely buy trip cancellation insurance for short plane rides, since they aren?t as expensive. However, for major trips, I buy insurance for a relatively small fee.

What Coverage Do You Already Have?

Next, figure out what coverage you already have. Call your health insurance provider, and explain where you are going, and what you hope to do there. If you are staying stateside, you?ll want to make sure that there are in-network providers nearby. One of the reasons that my family is insured by BlueCross BlueShield is that we can visit my husband?s family in New York, or my grandpa in Arizona, and there are in-network providers that cost less than out-of-network providers.

If you are traveling abroad, find out what your health insurance company will cover. Your policy might cover basic medical attention in some countries, and might even cover emergency evacuation ? if you aren?t involved in anything dangerous at the time of the accident. It?s worth it to check the health care policies of other countries, too, since some of the developed countries offer universal health care that won?t cost you anything (others, though, have citizenship requirements).

Be up front about dangerous activities, such as rafting, mountain climbing, zip-lining, and other extreme/adventure sports. You should also realize that if you are visiting an undeveloped country or a remote location, you might have to purchase extra insurance to cover you in the event of a rescue. A helicopter ride out of the Himalayas can be quite expensive if you don?t have the insurance to cover it.

Realize, too, that your credit card issuer might already be covering you. Some cards cover rental cars, and you might already have lost baggage coverage. Sometimes, you even have trip cancellation if you make your purchase with the credit card. Double check your benefits to see what is available to you.

You want to ensure that you are properly protected when you travel. Consider your needs, and then purchase the insurance that will address them.
