It's been two days since Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban were confirmed as American Idol judges on Season 12.

And there's already talk of contention among panelists.

According to show sources, Mariah Carey was peeved from the outset over Minaj possibly joining the judging table, considering the outspoken rapper would give the pop legend a run for her diva-like money.

Asked by reporters yesterday about the supposed tension between her and Minaj, Carey dismissed the chatter, saying: "How can we feud in two days? I think a feud takes a little longer."

Nicki didn't have anything negative to say about Mariah, either, labeling her very brief Idol experience - which includes a couple hours of auditions - so far as "wonderful."

Concluded Randy Jackson: "We're having fun, dude. We've been having a good time. There has been a lot of laughs."

Once you've created a page with them, you get pretty much the same design as every other customer?there's no way to customize yourself out of their mesh-network-graphic front page?but it's a great design with some great features. Unlike personal Web page sites like Flavors.me (our Editors' Choice) and About.me that build a great looking site using a user-provided large static image as the background, Vizify's look is a more dynamic looking web of link icons. At first view, you might think that Vizify is built using Adobe Flash, so what's the big deal? That's all HTML 5 programming, making that web of iconic links look that good. As such, Vizify's pages scale down and look great even on a smartphone browser. They're fast and responsive and you get from page to page on Vizify very fast. Just click a round link to jump directly, or use the arrow on the right to cycle through the pages.

The key to success with Vizify is to already have a presence on the major social networks. You sign in using one of those accounts, then link all the rest. LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, and Instagram are all supported. Vizify will pull in pertinent information for its various pages, as well as provide direct links to those services on your Links page.

Each Vizify site consists of a number of stock page types that you can edit. When you land on a page when signed in to your account, click the edit button in the upper right to change it. Visitors get the option to share the pages via Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest, Tumbler, or email.

Click Edit when you're on the home page and you get to see and change the entire content overview, such as what services you pull your profile photo from, page arrangement, the color scheme, or link Vizify to a new service (limited to the five you can use to log-in).

Pages you get include:

Links to all your social networks, plus more you can add like a personal site, company site, blog, or more. Title of the link is limited to a piddling 25 characters

Locations you've called home with animation to show the order in which you lived in those places.

Words builds an interactive, real-time updatable word-cloud of what you say most on Twitter, if you really need such a thing.

Factoid page(s) let you insert interesting facts about yourself, such as how many years you've worked, or number of cats you own.

Photo page(s) naturally let you feature a big piece of art you upload (or pull from Instagram or Facebook).

Quote page(s) let you layer in as many pithy prose one-liners as you thing people can stand.

Activities is a page only for those with a Foursquare account; it's meant to show off what you've done lately. It doesn't work with Facebook check-ins.

Career page builds a timeline of your work and education history, based on your LinkedIn profile info. You can edit it after the fact, but can't pull in more updates from LinkedIn.

Education to show off where you went to college(s) or high school. Vizify will slap your college's logo on the page if the logo is in its database.

Vizify also promotes its "visual email signature," to add add to Gmail, Outlook, or any that supports Rich Text signatures. It's essentially a quick way of linking people back to your Vizify site.

You can make your bio private on Vizify. That defeats the purpose, but handy if you want the site to take a break. You can also easily delete your account, which not all services make easy, so Kudos for that.

The downsides to Vizify are in the details. For example, text boxes don't always support HTML, even if you just want a simple link; Vizify wants all your links on the Links page only. It would be nice if your homemade links on the Links page could bea differentiated by a unique icon or a thumbnail image you provide.

You can change your Vizify URL any time ? the format is always www.vizify.com/yourname. Sadly, Vizify doesn't support using a domain name, one of the best features of Flavors.me. While you can always go to a third party and point it at your Vizify page, it's not a clean as having the domain be part of the service, like it is with Flavors.me.

If you need ultra-simple setup and a clean, responsive interface for a personal Web page, Vizify is a great pick. It lacks the extras that put Flavors.me and About.me in the upper echelon, but keep an eye on this service. Eventually Vizify might top them all.?

Paul Ryan cuts a trim figure. But is it 6-percent-body-fat trim?

In case you haven?t heard, Paul Ryan works out. A lot, apparently; he?s so much of a ?fitness guy,? as he?s said, that for days after Mitt Romney chose him as his vice-presidential candidate, the media could talk about little else but the fact that Ryan leads a group of congressmen in a daily workout called P90X, a hugely popular, high-intensity workout routine with a cultlike following.

The legend of Paul Ryan?s physical fitness got even crazier when the boy-wonder V.P. candidate bragged to Hugh Hewitt about his marathon running, claiming he?d run the 26.2-mile race in ?under three [hours], high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something. ? I was fast when I was younger, yeah.?

Of course, we now know that was a lie. As Runner?s World discovered, Ryan?s time was 4:01:25, and as a Ryan spokesman admitted, it was his one and only marathon. He was 20 when he ran it, and yet he still would have lost to a 40-ish Sarah Palin. Whoops. Diehard runners were ticked off, of course, and the Ryan marathon soon became a punch line.

Left unexamined, however, was another, equally outrageous claim: That Ryan has 6 percent body fat. This was endlessly repeated at the time of his selection?trumpeted in headlines (both here and abroad) and even in editorial-page cartoons. ?Oh, to be a pair of calipers,? swooned Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. ?Paul Ryan shirtless? became one of the most popular Internet searches?despite yielding only one softish vacation photo?which makes it all the more strange that nobody has taken a closer look.

Well, guess what: He?s probably lying about the body fat thing, too. Or, at best, wildly exaggerating.

The ?6 percent body fat? meme seems to have originated in a 2010 interview with Mike Allen of Politico. Allen asked him about P90X??a fad, a craze that you?ve created here on Capitol Hill.? Ryan, who says he once worked as a ?fitness trainer,? talks about the workout group, which at the time he led with then-Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.): ?Tony Horton, the creator of it, comes by and works out with us every few months. It works because it?s called muscle confusion, it hits your body in many different ways?pull-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, lots of cardio, karate, jump training, yoga. So what it does is it pushes your body in many different ways so that it gets out of its plateau.?

Sounds good. But then he can?t help but brag: ?I keep my body fat between 6 and 8 percent,? he tells Allen.

Here?s who else maintains 6 to 8 percent body fat: Olympic 100-meter sprinters, that?s who. Also, world-class boxers, wrestlers, and marathoners, according to this study of elite American athletes. Top collegiate swimmers look pretty fit, right? Well, they average out at a plump 9.5 percent, at least according to another study. Positively porky, compared to Ryan. (For some perspective, the average man has body fat of 17 to 24 percent, and most women a bit more.)

If his claim is to be believed?a Ryan spokesman did not respond to questions?he?s more along the lines of Tour de France cyclists who also get down around 8 or 9 percent to prepare for major races. According to I?igo San Millan, a veteran cycling physiologist who has worked with numerous Tour de France teams, the lowest body fat he?s ever measured on a cyclist was 8.3 percent. That?s at peak fitness, racing shape.

Ryan?s claim, in other words, puts him squarely in the company of elite athletes. (And also, freakily, with these guys.) But while Ryan is definitely skinny?he told Allen that he?s 6-foot-2 and weighs 163 pounds, and his suits flutter like a Christo project gone wrong?that might be a stretch. At anything less than 10 percent body fat, says Martin Rooney, a well-known trainer who works with NFL and MMA athletes, ?a man with his shirt off is lean and shredded. Veins everywhere and really cut up. This is the model and bodybuilder look. So if he is saying he is 6 percent, he is shredded with a six-pack and should have no reason not to do photo shoots everywhere.?

So far, he hasn?t. The only topless Ryan photo to surface is this grainy vacation shot on TMZ, from before he started P90X. So we can?t know for sure. Also not showing up: any summit shots from Ryan?s claimed 38 trips up Colorado?s 14,000-foot-high peaks, or ?fourteeners,? a claim that has also generated skepticism among climbers. In a nutshell, there was confusion over whether Ryan had climbed 40 of the state?s 53 fourteeners, as he seems to have led at least one local politician to believe, or (as a campaign statement later clarified) ?almost 40 climbs? up 28 different peaks.

Romney enters critical phase, will talk up economic plan

BURLINGTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney plans to talk up some specifics of his economic proposals as he enters a critical period of his campaign and tries to erase a small lead that President Barack Obama has built in the polls.

Romney's challenge is to keep it close until the campaign goes into its conclusive phase next month, when he and Obama met on October 3 for the first of three presidential debates that will dominate the final weeks leading up to the November 6 election.

In a race defined by the weakness of the U.S. economy, Romney needs to convince voters that they can trust him as the Obama campaign tries to raise doubts about the economic proposals he has offered, such as what government programs would he cut and how he would pay for a 20 percent across-the-board tax cut.

To that end, Romney advisers say the former Massachusetts governor plans this week to talk up the specifics of each of the five central points of his economic message: beefing up energy production and trade, improving education, cutting government spending and helping small businesses by, among other things, reducing regulations.

"We are, starting Monday, going to hammer on each aspect of the Romney plan for a stronger middle class," a senior Romney adviser said.

On Monday and Tuesday, Romney will talk about the United States' burdensome $16 trillion debt, Obama's role in making it bigger and ways to reduce it, a senior campaign aide said.

Romney has been pressing the five themes as part of his stump speech but has been under pressure from some conservatives to provide more specifics about his economic plans rather than simply campaign on the struggling economy and blame Obama for 8.1 percent unemployment.

The Romney senior adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Romney's plans this week were not in reaction to the criticism.

Instead, it is more a response to voters' desire for both sides to talk in more detail about their plans. The adviser noted that Obama has faced questions as well about what he would do in a second term.

A raft of new surveys of American voters showed Obama got a measurable bounce of support from the Democratic National Convention earlier this month after being locked in a neck-and-neck battle with Romney for months.

The latest Gallup survey published on Sunday, however, showed Obama's lead narrowing slightly, with 48 percent for the president to 45 percent for Romney.

Romney aides feel the race remains as close as ever and that Obama's convention bounce will evaporate.

"We feel very good," said the adviser. "We just have to continue building our ground game."

DEBATE PREP

Romney's biggest test yet may come in the first debate, to be held in Denver. It will focus on domestic policy.

Romney engaged in a debate preparation session at a hotel on Sunday, the latest in a series of meetings aimed at studying up on how best to deal with Obama during the debates.

A senior Romney aide said the campaign sees the debates as a big opportunity for Romney's message to be heard by large numbers of voters.

"He's doing great," said the man who is playing the role of Obama in debate preparation, Ohio Republican Senator Rob Portman.

"Say nothing more, say nothing more," a chuckling Romney told reporters as they pressed Portman for more details on the Romney campaign plane on Friday.

Romney was headed to Los Angeles to speak to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Monday in his latest attempt to connect with a Latino community that is distrustful of him due to the hard line he took on immigration during this year's Republican primaries.

Last week the campaign was dominated by foreign policy after four Americans were killed at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and Muslim anger at a film denigrating the Prophet Mohammad led to anti-American protests throughout much of the Middle East.

Romney's initial response to the bloodshed, criticizing the U.S. Embassy in Cairo for a statement he said was essentially an apology to the protesters, backfired on him and he spent days on the defensive, distracting attention away from his strict focus on the economy.

New potential targets discovered for treating squamous cell lung cancers

ScienceDaily (Sep. 9, 2012) ? A new paper published online in Nature holds out hope that people with the second most common type of lung cancer may one day benefit from targeted therapies that have transformed treatments for other lung cancer patients.

Squamous cell lung cancer kills more people each year than breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer, ranking second only to lung adenocarcinoma in the number of deaths it causes. But unlike the most common form of lung cancer, squamous cell carcinoma has no treatments aimed at the specific genetic alterations that drive it.

That picture may change. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Research Network, led in part by scientists at the Broad Institute, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Harvard Medical School, has identified many potential therapeutic targets based on the large number and variety of DNA alterations they discovered in most of the tumors they studied.

"This study clearly shows that squamous cell carcinoma, like lung adenocarcinoma, is a cancer with diverse genomic causes, many of which are potentially susceptible to drug inhibition," said Matthew Meyerson, co-leader of the project within TCGA, Broad senior associate member, and professor of pathology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. "This provides many new therapeutic opportunities for squamous cell carcinoma that would be suitable for clinical trials."

The first targeted treatments for lung adenocarcinoma, erlotinib (Tarceva) and gefitinib (Iressa), were aimed at mutations in the EGFR gene. Unfortunately, and like other drugs being tested in clinical trials that target several other genes altered in lung adenocarcinoma, they do not help patients with squamous cell carcinoma. The TCGA effort, a multicenter consortium funded by the National Institutes of Health, is the first comprehensive genomic characterization of this lung cancer subtype. Squamous cell carcinoma causes approximately 400,000 deaths per year worldwide.

As in the three previous TCGA reports on the brain cancer glioblastoma, on ovarian cancer, and on colorectal cancer, the scientists used multiple large-scale approaches to highlight key molecular defects. They sequenced the protein-coding segments of the genomes of 178 squamous cell carcinoma tumors, along with normal tissue from the same patients. The researchers also sequenced the whole genomes of 19 tumor and normal tissue pairs. They mapped a diverse catalog of genomic alterations, including the rearrangements of chromosomes and other structural changes in regions of the genome that might not encode proteins but could control nearby genes involved in cancer development.

The comprehensive study confirmed some previously identified genomic alterations. For example, the TP53 gene was altered in 90 percent of the tumors and the CDKN2A gene was inactivated in 72 percent of tumors. These genes normally prevent cancer, but when they are switched off, tumors can grow unimpeded. CDKN2A may be susceptible to a kinase inhibitor, presenting an opportunity for clinical trials.

Overall the researchers identified mutations or amplifications in three families of tyrosine kinases, which are enzymes that act like power switches for many cellular functions. Frequently altered in cancer, they are already being investigated as therapeutic targets in other cancers. The researchers also found genomic alterations in signaling pathways that could present important opportunities for treatment.

In another striking finding, the researchers discovered mutations in the HLA-A gene that hampered its function in tumors. HLA genes direct the arm of the immune system that discriminates between its own tissues and foreign invaders. This is the first cancer in which these mutations have been found, but they are likely to occur in other cancers, Meyerson said.

"To our knowledge, this is the first example of a tumor that has a genomic mechanism for evading an immune response," he said. "This may be important in understanding the immune response to squamous cell carcinoma and also in envisioning how immune-regulatory therapy might be used for this disease."

While much works needs to be done, the scientists see many opportunities.

"When we see lung cancer patients, it's almost a double standard. If you have lung adenocarcinoma, we can offer you molecular testing, we can put you in trials, we can put you on some targeted drugs," said Peter S. Hammerman, a co-chair of the paper's writing and analysis committee, an associated researcher at the Broad, a member of the thoracic oncology program and instructor at Dana-Farber and Harvard Medical School. "If you have squamous cell lung cancer, you get the same treatment today you got 10 years ago, which is no more effective than it was 10 years ago. We're just starting to see the first glimmers of hope in squamous cell lung cancer. This paper takes us to the next level in terms of identifying a number of potentially interesting targets to work on."

The Broad's participation in the TCGA network included leadership of three centers: the Genome Sequencing Center, for which Broad Director Eric S. Lander is the principal investigator; one of six Genome Characterization Centers, led by Meyerson; and one of six Genome Data Analysis Centers, led by Gad Getz, director of Cancer Genome Computational Analysis at the Broad, and Broad senior associate member Lynda Chin, formerly at Dana-Farber and now at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

"I think it's the hope of all of us who worked on this study that we'll catalyze a large new set of clinical trials in squamous cell carcinoma," Meyerson said.
