Cybercrooks preying on small businesses | Naked Security

Small businesses might think they are little enough to escape cybercrooks' attention, but they're increasingly wrong.

Case in point: thieves in May took a mere few hours to vacuum $1.2 million out of the bank account of a mannequin maker and importer, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The cybercrooks used online transactions to fraudulently transfer the money from the bank account of Lifestyle Forms & Displays Inc., a 100-employee company in Brooklyn, NY.

The mannequin maker's problems started when the head of finance couldn't get a routine online payment to a foreign vendor to go through.

Repeated attempts to log into the company's banking site with a secure ID token password only resulted in error messages.

The bank said it wasn't a problem on its end. The three-person IT team at Lifestyle Forms & Displays suspected a virus, even though the anti-virus software was up to date.

By the next morning, after IT had cleaned up the computers, they discovered that the thieves had wired the $1.2 million through nine transactions of about $150,000 each to three major U.S. banks and one Chinese bank, the WSJ reports.

CEO Lloyd Keilson tried to claw that money back.

He was partly successful: within five days, the company's bank, New York-based Signature Bank, managed to recover nearly $800,000 from two recipients of the stolen funds: Wells Fargo and J.P. Morgan Chase.

Keilson didn't have such luck with Bank of America and Agricultural Bank of China, the latter of which the WSJ couldn't even manage to reach for comment.

So Keilson set out to make a nuisance of himself: a productive strategy, it turns out.

He pulled the strings of his network. That got him in touch with the secretary to the CEO of one of the US banks.

Using such tactics, he regained a total of about $1.04 million of the stolen money within 15 days of the robbery.

Keilson told the WSJ that he's now trying to figure out if his company's bank is legally responsible for making up the balance of the funds, which are now unaccounted for.

Signature Bank has denied that the security vulnerability was on its part, however.

If the bank is truly without blame, Mr Keilson can likely kiss those funds goodbye, barring the FBI and/or New York Police's success in tracking it down.

George Tubin, a senior security strategist for Trusteer Inc., a provider of cybercrime prevention technology, told the WSJ that courts don't often hold banks liable in cybercrime cases that involve security breaches of their customers' computers:

It comes down to what type of security a bank has in place to detect fraud and what the small business did for the hackers to be able to access its accounts. ? As long as the bank provides commercially reasonable security, then the bank's not liable.

The WSJ reports that the theft is indicative of a growing trend wherein criminals are increasingly targeting small businesses.

That trend can be seen in figures from Verizon Communications, which found that about 72% of 855 data breaches analyzed in its 2012 Data Breach Investigations Report [PDF] were at companies with 100 or fewer employees, up from 63% of 761 data breaches analyzed in 2010.

Since the theft, Keilson has instituted a few important safeguards to protect Lifestyle Forms & Displays: 1) no more outbound bank transactions without verbal clearance from an authorized company executive, and 2) a $1 million insurance policy that costs $13,000 a year and will cover losses from cyber fraud.

Good moves. Not many businesses, small or large, have realized what a good deal cybercrime damage insurance currently is.

At the SOURCE:Boston security conference in the spring, Jake Kouns, director of cyber security and technology risks underwriting for Markel Corporation, noted that most companies assume their general liability or professional liability insurance will cover them in the case of cyber attack.

They, most likely, don't.

Sony, for one, found that out following its huge PlayStation Network breach.

Sony's insurer, Zurich American Insurance Co., contested any obligation to cover costs related to lawsuits filed over the breach, arguing that its policy only covered claims for bodily injury, property damage, or personal and advertising injury.

So, is $13,000 a lot for an insurance policy?

Think of the potential costs of a data breach:

• Lawsuits, including fines and penalties
• Transmission of malicious code to other networks
• Loss of the use of your network
• Cost to notify affected individuals
• Credit monitoring for customers
• Identity restoration services
• Security consultants
• Legal notices
• Restoration of system and data
• Extra expenses to remain functional, including new hardware and/or services
• Payment of extortion demands
• Lost time, lost monies, lost business
• Liability from defamatory content maliciously posted on your site, intensified by the search potential of the internet

That list is just for starters.

Is $13,000/year a lot to cover such costs?

Mr Keilson evidently thinks not. Perhaps other small businesses - and large ones too, for that matter - should follow his lead.

Kirstie Allopp's Devon holiday home | Country Calling

When it comes to finding the best place for a beach holiday in the South West, Kirstie Allsopp?s stylish Devon home pretty much nails it..

You?d expect Kirstie Allsopp?s holiday house to be pretty close to perfect and, of course, it is. Meadowgate was a battered old farmhouse a short, winding hobble from Welcome Mouth Bay in North Devon and it had stood empty for 38 years before Kirstie swooped in and turned it into a Channel 4 makeover show.

The house itself, as you can see, is no showstopper but true to form Kirstie knew the value of its extraordinary location, less than half a mile from a beautiful, little known beach reached through picturesque National Trust woods.

For her show Homemade House Kirstie furnished the whole pad on a shoestring budget scouring junk shops and salvage yards to find such gems as the kitchen dresser, vintage roll top bath and antique furniture throughout. She also met up with local craftspeople to relearn old-fashioned home-making skills and the house is a shrine to hand-made ? cushions, curtains, handblown vases

It?s pretty cool though, countrified without being too Cath Kidston, vintage without being too grannyish. And it?s uplifting seeing a house looking so individual and stylish without resorting to loadsamoney designer everything which starts to look a bit uniform after a while.

Aside from the phenomenal location, why this house really works is because it?s been made over with large family holidays in mind. It sleeps 14 -??- five double bedrooms (all great though there may be some undignified squabbling over the master bedroom which has a rolltop bath), a twin room and a double bunk room ? perfect for two or three famillies sharing. There?s a games room too and a good sized garden and the interior, dare we say, looks like it can take a bit of tough living unlike some manicured holiday houses where you?re too frightened to fart. ?There?s even a second sitting room for kids ?- surely every house should have one?

The kitchen is a large, practical living space with an aga at one end and a big dining table at the other. There are Kirstie?s touches everywhere ? the gold WOW lettering, the huge dresser and tons of mismatched vintage china.

Love the bathrooms, baths and basins picked up from salvage yards, antique mirrors and furniture giving the rooms a kind of laidback 30s vibe. Got to say only Kirstie could get away with primrose yellow bathware ?( maybe don?t try this at home).

The bedrooms are all luxurious ? perhaps a tad granny for our taste with the vintage plates on the wall and sagey colours but in a holiday house, it works. And the beds are all Vi-Sprung, which are possibly the most comfortable mattresses in the world. We say if it?s good enough for the Hotel du Vin?.

Rainy days are no problem with this games room, we envisage adults elbowing kids out of the way..

Welcombe Mouth cove is a stunning beach set between two cliffs in an area of outstanding national beauty. What?s more it?s right off the beaten track so you won?t be bothered by the tourist hordes ? book off season and you won?t see a soul.

You?re just a few miles from Bude here with its stellar surfing. Book the ?kids in for lessons at the??The Big Blue Surf School and park up at Life?s A Beach cafe on Summerleaze Beach afterwards for a serious seafood lunch. Mostly though we think you?ll just want to hang at Kirstie?s pad?..

Weak retail sales figures push stocks lower

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks closed mostly lower on Wall Street Thursday after signs emerged that Americans are spending at a slower pace and that China's economy may be in worse shape than previously thought.

American shoppers slowed their spending in June, resulting in tepid sales for many retailers. Target's stock fell 1 percent and Costco Wholesale fell less than a percent after reporting that sales rose less than analysts were expecting.

"It all boils down to one little word: uncertainty," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital. "No one will spend if it feels like we're in a recession."

The reports raised concerns about Americans' ability to spend during the back-to-school shopping season, which starts later this month. That's a crucial period for retailers.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 47.15 points at 12,896.67 on Thursday. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 6.44 points to 1,367.58. The Nasdaq composite was 0.04 point higher at 2,976.12.

Eight of the 10 major industries tracked by the S&P 500 fell, led by bank stocks. JPMorgan Chase fell $1.50, or 4 percent, to $34.38, while Bank of America fell 24 cents, or 3 percent, to $7.82.

China surprised investors earlier Thursday when it cut interest rates for the second time in a month. That caused investors to worry that the downturn in the world's second-largest economy may be worse than previously expected.

The People's Bank of China cut its main lending rate 0.31 percentage point to 6 percent and reduced its deposit rates by a quarter of a percentage point to 3 percent. The bank said the lower rates are intended to boost economic growth in the second half of the year. Analysts said the cuts are also a sign that Chinese authorities are increasingly concerned about that country's economy.

As the largest buyer of raw materials, a slowdown in China can hurt sales at a wide range of companies and cause commodities prices to weaken. Crude oil fell 44 cents to $87.22 per barrel, and copper lost 4.7 cents to $3.493 a pound.

Central banks in Europe also moved to stem a slowdown there. The Bank of England approved a 50 billion pound injection into the ailing British economy, while the European Central Bank cut its main interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 0.75 percent, the lowest it's been since the bank was established in 1999.

Usually central bank action to spur economies bolsters stock prices. But investors were cautious ahead of the closely-watched U.S. government's report on hiring for June that is scheduled for release on Friday.

"Given the big negative headlines we have had this past month from Europe, business owners would have been cautious about hiring," said Steven Goldman, principal of asset manager Goldman Management. Goldman expects the data to reflect a weak jobs market.

Economists are predicting that the unemployment rate held steady at 8.2 percent.

However, at least two reports on Thursday sketched a picture of a slowly improving job market.

Weekly unemployment benefit applications dropped by 14,000 to 374,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the fewest since the week of May 19.

Separately, payroll provider ADP said businesses added 176,000 jobs last month. That's better than the revised total of 136,000 jobs it reported for May. If that pace keeps up, it would be enough to lower the unemployment rate.

An increase in jobs will spur people to spend and provide a boost to the economy. Though some key retailers reported poor sales for June, several others beat analysts' expectations.

Ross Stores stock rose $4.41, or over 7 percent, to $67.19 after the discount store operator said sales at stores open at least a year rose 7 percent in June, easily beating Wall Street predictions. TJX Cos., which operates T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Home Goods stores, also reported a wider-than-expected 7 percent increase in sales last month. Its stock rose $1.59, or 3.7 percent, to $44.09.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Netflix jumped $9.68, or 13.5 percent, to $81.72 after the company said earlier this week that its online subscriber base was increasing.

? Apple gained $10.53, or 1.76 percent, to $609.94, after The Wall Street Journal reported that the company is preparing to come out with a tablet computer with a screen smaller than the one its hugely popular iPad.

? OraSure Technologies Inc. surged $1.26, or 10.4 percent, to $13.35 after the Food and Drug Administration approved the healthcare product company's in-home oral test for HIV, which will be sold in stores starting in October.
