New chemical sensor makes finding landmines and buried IEDs easier

A chemical sensing system developed by engineers at the University of Connecticut is believed to be the first of its kind capable of detecting vapors from buried landmines and other explosive devices with the naked eye rather than advanced scientific instrumentation.

The research was first reported in the May 11, 2012 online edition of Advanced Functional Materials.

The key to the system is a fluorescent nanofiberous film that can detect ultra-trace levels of explosive vapors and buried explosives when applied to an area where explosives are suspected. A chemical reaction marking the location of the explosive device occurs when the film is exposed to handheld ultraviolet light.

The system can detect nitroaromatics such as those found in TNT and 2,4-DNT (the military's primary explosive and the principle components in landmines) as well as the elements used in harder to detect plastic explosives such as HMX, RDX, Tetryl, and PETN. The ultra-sensitive system can detect elements at levels as low as 10 parts per billion (TNT), 74 parts per trillion (Tetryl), 5 ppt (RDX), 7 ppt (PETN) and 0.1 ppt (HMX) released from one billionth of a gram of explosive residue.

If there is no explosive vapor present, the recyclable film retains a bright fluorescent cyan blue color when exposed to ultraviolet light. If explosive molecules are present, the fluorescence is quenched and a dark circle identifying the threat forms on the film within minutes.

"Our initial results have been very promising," says UConn Dr. Ying Wang, who developed the system as a chemical engineering doctoral student working under the supervision of UConn Associate Engineering Professor Yu Lei. "We are now in the process of arranging a large-scale field test in Sweden."

Rather than using sophisticated chemical modifications or costly synthetic polymers in preparing the sensing material, UConn scientists prepared their ultra-thin film by simply electrospinning pyrene with polystyrene in the presence of an organic salt (tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate or TBAH). This resulted in a highly porous nanofiberous membrane that absorbs explosive vapors at ultra-trace levels quickly and reliably. The film also has excellent sensitivity against common interferences such as ammonium nitrate and inorganic nitrates. Initial vapor detection took place within seconds with more than 90 percent fluorescent quenching efficiency within six minutes.

According to the United Nations, there are an estimated 110 million active landmines hidden underground in 64 countries around the world. It is estimated that as many as 25,000 people are maimed or killed by landmines each year across the globe. The mines not only threaten people's lives, they can paralyze communities by limiting the use of land for farming or roads for trade.

Clearing mines is a slow and deliberative process often involving specially-trained dogs and metal detectors, but each method has its shortcomings. Dogs, considered the gold standard in detection, eventually tire and can experience difficulty differentiating in dense minefields. Metal detectors are prone to false positive readings that can be triggered by buried pieces of metal unrelated to a mine or unexploded ordinance.

While explosive material can be concealed within landmines and IEDs, the seal is often not airtight and small amounts of vapors escape allowing for detection.

The film developed by Wang and Lei is very light weight, similar to paper, and can be rolled out over a suspect area like a sheet. The electrospinning process makes it both easy and affordable to produce.

"We would be very interested in following up on any kind of research that looks at chemical detection systems," says Erik Tollefsen, advisor for stockpile destruction, EOD and technology for the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD). "This is something we might use as a quality control tool for animal detection. There are some cost benefits here."

"The general observation is that chemical detection systems work on a nano-level and our animal-based systems are on the pico-level, which is 1,000 times more sensitive," Tollefsen says. "But obviously with animals, you can't switch them on and off like a machine and they are sometimes difficult to work with."

Wang and Lei have also developed a novel chemical test for detecting TNT in water and other liquids. The application could be used to detect potential terrorist threats in airports as well as groundwater contamination in areas where explosives were used in construction.

The ultra-sensitive, real-time sensor can detect TNT concentrations ranging from about 33 parts per trillion (the equivalent of one drop in 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools) to 225 parts per million.

"Our new sensor based on a recently developed fluorescent polymer for explosives in aqueous samples has two sensing mechanisms in one sensing material, which is very unique," says Lei. "The sensor can easily be incorporated into a paper test strip similar to those used for pregnancy tests, which means it can be produced and used at a very low cost."

Berkshire Hathaway's 2Q profit declines 9 percent

(AP) ? Second-quarter profits at Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. fell 9 percent because of bigger paper losses on derivatives the company sold, but many of its subsidiaries performed well.

Berkshire said Friday that it generated $3.1 billion net income, or $1.25 per Class B share. That's down from last year's second quarter net income of $3.4 billion, or $1.38 per Class B share. And last year's quarter was helped by a one-time $1.25 billion gain.

The results topped the $1.19 per share Wall Street was expecting, according to a FactSet survey.

Berkshire's revenue grew slightly to $38.5 billion from $38.3 billion. Profits improved in Berkshire's insurance units. And business improved at Berkshire's utility, railroad, manufacturing and retail businesses.

Buffett has said it's better to look at Berkshire earnings without the derivative losses and investment gains. He says Berkshire's investment and derivative gains or losses can be misleading because the company rarely sells its investments.

Berkshire reported a 37 percent increase in its operating profit. Berkshire reported $3.7 billion in operating earnings, or $1.50 per Class B share. That's up from $2.7 billion, or $1.09 per Class B share, last year.

Andy Kilpatrick, the stockbroker-author who wrote "Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffett," said the results are impressive because during the second quarter Europe's debt woes increased and the overall economy slowed.

"I thought it was a good decent quarter in a bad world," Kilpatrick said.

Berkshire officials do not typically comment on quarterly earnings reports, and they did not immediately respond to a message Friday afternoon.

Berkshire recorded a $693 million loss on its derivative contracts in this year's second quarter. That's up from a $120 million loss last year.

The true value of the derivatives won't be clear for at least several years because they don't mature until nearly a decade from now. But Berkshire is required to estimate their value every time the company reports earnings.

Buffett has told investors he believes the contracts ? some of which are tied to equity markets and some of which are tied to credit defaults ? will ultimately be profitable because the premiums are being invested.

Berkshire owns roughly 80 subsidiaries, including clothing, furniture and jewelry firms. Its insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of the company's net income. It also has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

The quarterly results were issued after the stock market's close Friday. Berkshire's Class B shares rose $1.01, or about 1 percent, to $86.59 in after-hours trading Friday.

Mountains, seaway triggered North American dinosaur surge

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) ? The rise of the Rocky Mountains and the appearance of a major seaway that divided North America may have boosted the evolution of new dinosaur species, according to a new Ohio University-led study.

The finding, published today in the journal PLOS ONE, may explain patterns of evolution and migration of North American duck-billed and horned dinosaurs in the years leading up to their extinction 65 million years ago, said Terry Gates, a postdoctoral researcher with Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine who is lead author on the study.

"Over the past century, paleontologists have found a wide variety of dinosaurs in rocks dating to around 75 million years ago, but right before the asteroid hit at the end of the Cretaceous, there appeared to be fewer species in North America," he said. "The reason for this discrepancy in dinosaur diversity has never been adequately explained."

Gates and collaborators Albert Prieto-M?rquez and Lindsay Zanno turned to the geologic record of western North America for possible answers. They examined trends in mountain and ocean formation during a period 80-70 million years ago, when there was an apparent explosion of dinosaur species, and later, when species became less diverse.

The record painted a picture of pronounced geological change.

During the early to middle Cretaceous, geological forces lifted the western United States, creating a huge mountain range (the Sevier Mountains) that extended in a line from the American southwest through Alberta, Canada. The area just to the east of the new mountain range flexed downward, creating a shallow North American seaway (known as the Western Interior Seaway) that flooded the continent from the Canadian arctic to the Gulf of Mexico.

This seaway cut the continent into three large islands to the north, east and west that were densely populated with dinosaurs. The dinosaurs of the west lived on an island known as Laramidia. Most fossil discoveries have been made in the area of the northern part of the island, in places such as Alberta, South Dakota and Montana, while dinosaurs have been found only recently in the former areas of southern Laramidia.

"Western North America has been a hotbed for dinosaur discoveries for more than a century," Zanno noted, "but the recent explosion of new dinosaur species coming out of Utah is sending waves through the paleontological community and revolutionized our understanding of dinosaur evolution on the continent."

The new discoveries have helped illustrate how dinosaurs evolved on an island with changing geography. The rise of the Sevier Mountains and the growing seaway caused dinosaur habitat to shrink on Laramidia. Later, one of the tectonic plates under North America's crust shifted position, building another mountain range -- the Laramide Orogeny, or the infant stage of the modern-day Rocky Mountains -- further east.

"At that time, it appears that geographic, as well as probably also ecological, barriers created by the rise of mountain ranges and the seaway caused isolation of the northern and southern populations of the crested duck-billed and horned plant-eating dinosaurs. We hypothesize that such isolation facilitated rapid speciation and increased diversity in these animals," explained Prieto-M?rquez.

The new species of duck-billed and horned dinosaurs were being born at an astounding rate of every few hundred thousand years during the brief time when the two mountain ranges and the seaway coexisted, Gates said. "Isolating populations allows them to evolve new features more rapidly, especially when skull ornamentation such as head crests and horns play a role," he said.

Eventually, however, the continued rise of the Rocky Mountains would evict the seaway from the continent's interior. Gates and his colleagues argue that this second geological change opened up a wide territory for duck-billed and horned dinosaurs to roam, that, in turn, reduced how fast new species evolved in the region to every few million years.

"Our data suggests that changing geography contributed to the pattern we see in western North America, but also that this pattern is unique to this region and should not be blindly extrapolated to infer global diversity leading up to the K-T extinction event," Zanno noted.

The study also found that the same species of at least some duck-billed dinosaurs lived from Canada through southern Utah at some points in the Cretaceous. Yet, during the times of isolation, these giant plant-eaters "roamed a much smaller area than you might think given that many were larger than elephants," Gates noted. Scientists hypothesize that there are ecological as well as geological reasons behind this, including the possibility that dinosaurs evolved to eat specialized plants found only in certain regions.

The mountain and seaway changes not only impacted dinosaur diversity in North America, but may have had implications in other parts of the world. Global geological changes during this time created migration routes to Asia and South America. The team speculates that the rise of the early Rocky Mountains in North America created a barrier. Only species living in the southern part of Laramidia island could get to South America and only species living north of the mountains would have been able get to Asia across modern-day Alaska.

"These giant herbivores were truly invasive species that seemingly came to dominate these other continents," said Gates, adding that this idea needs to be tested further with additional fossil remains.

Almost 20 Maori food and drink producers have launched a collective with the aim of driving export sales and becoming one of the country?s lead exporters.

The initiative, which is called Indigenous New Zealand, aims to promote the company?s products here and overseas as a group while still retaining each producer?s individual brand name.

Project manager Lucy Cruickshank says if producers can collaborate on the sales and marketing side it can lead to economies.

She says if someone is proficiently marketing the collective?s products then it?s possible for firms to leverage off each other, so better known brands can assist lesser known brands getting into different channels.

Ms Cruickshank says she?s working to get the cluster into top outlets nationally as well as targeting a couple of offshore markets.

She says there?s no cost to join the collective and she hopes to increase the number of firms in it from 18 to about 30 in the next 12 months.

Ms Cruickshank says the aim is for the collective to break into the top 200 export market.

How to See Live Views of Mars Online This Week

NASA is just days away from putting a huge rover on Mars, but you don't have to wait until the robot's Sunday landing to see the Red Planet.

Starting today (Aug. 1), the web-based Slooh Space Camera sky observing site will webcast live views of Mars during three daily shows aimed at giving space enthusiasts a taste of the Red Planet before NASA's Mars rover Curiosity arrives on Sunday night (Aug. 5). The free webcasts, which begin at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT), will touch on different aspects of Mars exploration and the rover's ambitious mission, Slooh officials said.

"No celestial object can equal the mystique and intrigue of Mars," said astronomer Bob Berman, an Astronomy magazine columnist and Slooh editor, in a statement. "It is the nearest planet that could potentially have life, even if we now know it would have to be lurking under the surface. Plus, the Red Planet displays the most striking changes since every 26 months it rather suddenly becomes 60 times brighter than before. "

From Aug. 1 to Aug. 3, the Slooh Space Camera will webcast live telescope views of Mars from the website's Canary Islands observatory off the west coast of Africa. The telescope feeds, as well as commentary from a NASA scientist, Slooh officials and British documentary filmmaker Duncan Copp, can be accessed at the Slooh Space Camera website here: http://www.slooh.com

During tonight's webcast, Robert Manning, the chief engineer for NASA's Mars exploration program, will join Copp and Slooh president Patrick Paolucci to discuss the technology behind the Mars rover Curiosity and its $2.5 billion mission to explore the vast Gale Crater on the Martian surface.

The Curiosity rover is about the size of a Mini Cooper car, carries a nuclear power source for a two-year mission and is designed to spend at least two Earth years exploring Mars. It launched toward the Red Planet last November and is the largest rover ever sent to another world.

"Curiosity promises to be the most advanced spacecraft ever sent to Mars, and its discoveries are set to transform how we see the Red World," said Copp, who is producing a short film on the rover's mission.

Mars is currently visible in the night sky without the aid of a telescope (weather permitting). The Red Planet can be seen low in the southwestern sky just after sunset and dips below the horizon at about 10:30 p.m. local time.

Later this month, Mars will appear near other interesting night sky objects. On Aug. 14, Mars will shine near the ringed planet Saturn and bright star Spica. Then on Aug. 21, the moon joins the three objects for a quadruple celestial sight.
