Today sees the launch of three new smartphones on Sprint's network. First up is Google's current flagship device, the Galaxy Nexus. Sprint has the CDMA/LTE variant, which is very similar to the Verizon LTE version currently doing the rounds in the U.S. There's the same 720p HD SuperAMOLED display and 1.2GHz dual-core CPU that GNex owners have been enjoying since late 2011, and we're sure Sprint customers will be eager to get their hands on their very own version of the current Android flagship.

Next up is the LG Viper, an entry-level 4G LTE device for customers looking for a good all-round LTE smartphone. Inside you'll find a 1.2GHz dual-core processor along with NFC, Google Wallet and hotspot capability on top of a 4-inch WVGA NOVA display.

Finally, there's the Optimus Elite, which we got to play with just a few days ago at its launch event.  It's definitely an entry-level device, with a 3.5-inch HVGA display and 5MP camera. But if you're not looking for anything too fancy from your Android smartphone experience, you could definitely do a lot worse.

Look Into A Hunting Preserve When Educating A Youngster On How ...

If you are a sportsman that is aware of the state of youth hunting in this country, then I am sure that you know our children are the future of hunting for us all. It has never been truer than it is today. The youngsters of this day and age are stuck inside - targeted by corporations whose non-stop attack against them includes TV shows, movies, games and internet programing. All of these distractions have our kids stuck inside doing nothing other than blankly staring into an LED lit screen.

If we hunters are going to successfully compete against these distractions for time with our own kids then we need to give it our best shot. Kids today get instant gratification and satisfaction from the technology that they use. If they want to watch something in particular all they have to do is push a button and instantly it's on demand for them right in front of their eyes! They have been raised to believe that whatever you want can be had with the push of a button.

That brings me full circle to the topic of this article...

?Look Into A Hunting Preserve When Educating A Youngster On How To Properly Hunt.? As parents it's our responsibility to introduce our kids to hunting and nature. We need them hooked on hunting from the word go not on video games.

Children of this day and age expect video game action where the second you start an activity...BAM the excitement begins. Don't get me wrong and think that I am saying all sorts of shooting and killing has to happen for this to be a positive experience for them.

What I am saying though is that there needs to be lots of action. Seeing several deer or roaming packs of hogs all throughout a property or hunt. For a kids first outing, I think that a Hunting Preserve has distinct advantages over your basic hunting camp/club set-up.

Hunting Preserves by design have lots of animals, superb hunting action, and in most preserves very roomy - quiet - comfortable hunting stands. The word "ACTION" is the key in that last sentence. That's what the youngsters of today are looking for and that is what we should try and deliver for their 1st hunting trip.

Obviously before your child is ready to go out into the woods and harvest an animal there are several preparations to be made and skills that must be mastered and learned. Hunter safety, firearm handling, outdoorsman skills along with others need to be passed on from adult to child before a hunt can happen. Make it part of your plan from the start that once these skills are mastered the reward is the first hunting trip.

This I know I did right with my child and his 1st hunting experience. I know that he will never forget it. From the word go he was hooked on hunting and I am quite sure that he still is to this very day. Because of the actions I took when he was a young child I now have a life-long hunting partner. He started successfully as a young boy and now at 14 yrs. old he is a very accomplished hunter who has taken several deer all by himself.

I hope that the sportsman who read this, who is concerned about the future of hunting, will educate a child on the proper ways of hunting and take them on a trip of a lifetime. If that first-time experience is at a game preserve, then great! If not just make sure you do all you can to ensure it is full of fun and full of ACTION. By doing so we will be successful in keeping the next generation of hunters involved in the sport and this will ensure that hunting stays strong and grows well into the future.

Robots fighting wars could be blamed for mistakes on the battlefield

ScienceDaily (Apr. 23, 2012) ? As militaries develop autonomous robotic warriors to replace humans on the battlefield, new ethical questions emerge. If a robot in combat has a hardware malfunction or programming glitch that causes it to kill civilians, do we blame the robot, or the humans who created and deployed it?

Some argue that robots do not have free will and therefore cannot be held morally accountable for their actions. But UW psychologists are finding that people don't have such a clear-cut view of humanoid robots.

The researchers' latest results show that humans apply a moderate amount of morality and other human characteristics to robots that are equipped with social capabilities and are capable of harming humans. In this case, the harm was financial, not life-threatening. But it still demonstrated how humans react to robot errors.

The findings imply that as robots become more sophisticated and humanlike, the public may hold them morally accountable for causing harm.

"We're moving toward a world where robots will be capable of harming humans," said lead author Peter Kahn, a UW associate professor of psychology. "With this study we're asking whether a robotic entity is conceptualized as just a tool, or as some form of a technological being that can be held responsible for its actions."

The paper was recently published in the proceedings of the International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction.

In the study, Kahn and his research team had 40 undergraduate students play a scavenger hunt with a humanlike robot, Robovie. The robot appeared autonomous, but it was remotely controlled by a researcher concealed in another room.

After a bit of small talk with the robot, each participant had two minutes to locate objects from a list of items in the room. They all found the minimum, seven, to claim the $20 prize. But when their time was up, Robovie claimed they had found only five objects.

Then came the crux of the experiment: participants' reactions to the robot's miscount.

"Most argued with Robovie," said co-author Heather Gary, a UW doctoral student in developmental psychology. "Some accused Robovie of lying or cheating."

When interviewed, 65 percent of participants said Robovie was to blame -- at least to a certain degree -- for wrongly scoring the scavenger hunt and unfairly denying the participants the $20 prize.

This suggests that as robots gain capabilities in language and social interactions, "it is likely that many people will hold a humanoid robot as partially accountable for a harm that it causes," the researchers wrote.

They argue that as militaries transform from human to robotic warfare, the chain of command that controls robots and the moral accountability of robotic warriors should be factored into jurisprudence and the Laws of Armed Conflict for cases when the robots hurt humans.

Kahn is also concerned about the morality of robotic warfare, period. "Using robotic warfare, such as drones, distances us from war, can numb us to human suffering, and make warfare more likely," he said.

The National Science Foundation funded the study. Co-authors at UW are Nathan Freier, Jolina Ruckert, Solace Shen, Heather Gary and Aimee Reichert. Other co-authors are Rachel Severson, Western Washington University; Brian Gill, Seattle Pacific University; and Takayuki Kanda and Hiroshi Ishiguro, both of Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute in Japan, which created Robovie.

Bacteria Talk, Plants Listen: The Discovery of Plant Immune Receptors, an Interview with Pamela Ronald

A series of graduate student conversations with leading women biologists, at the Women in Science Symposium at Cornell April 2-3.

Prof. Pamela Ronald, a Professor in Plant Pathology at University of California, Davis and director of Grass Genetics at the Joint Bioenergy Institute, studies genes that control the plant response to stress.

In her presentation for the Frontiers in Life Sciences symposium at Cornell University, Ronald described the isolation of a novel bacterial signal that is key to bacterial communication. In a process called quorum sensing, bacteria use this molecule, called Ax21, to communicate with each other, essentially transforming these single celled organisms into a coordinated team of fierce invaders. Remarkably, the rice XA21 receptor can detect these small molecules. That detection triggers a robust defense response. As she said, ?Bacteria talk, plants listen.?

In 1995, the Ronald Laboratory isolated and characterized the XA21 immune receptor (Song et al. Science 1995; Lee et al., Science 2009). Subsequent discoveries in flies (Lemaitre et al., 1996), humans (Medzhitov, et al. 1997), mice (Poltorak et al, 1998), and Arabidopsis (Gomez-Gomez, 2000) revealed that animals and other plant species also carry membrane-anchored receptors with striking structural similarities to XA21 and that these receptors also play key roles recognition of microbial signatures and host defense (Ronald and Beutler, Science 2010). The importance of this work is reflected in the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Beutler and Hoffman, who discovered the animal receptors.

Ronald?s team also led the isolation of a gene, Sub1A, that makes rice tolerant to flooding for over 2 weeks. This is a vast improvement over the two or three days that most conventional strains can tolerate. In flood-prone regions, submergence tolerance is critical for survival of this staple food crop and to the people who depend on it for sustenance. Her collaborator, David Mackill, has now introduced Sub1 A into six different varieties using a marker assisted breeding approach. In 2011, 1 million farmers grew Sub1 rice.

Not one to shy away from a chance for discussion, Ronald has been around the world engaging the public on the importance of science-based approaches to issues of food security, organic farming, and plant genetics. Together with her husband, organic farmer Raoul Adamchak, Ronald co-wrote the book Tomorrow?s Table: Organic Farming, Genetics, and the Future of Food. This book, and the blog that followed, are accessible accounts of genetics, food and farming and the importance of sustainable agriculture.

I had the opportunity to interview Prof. Ronald following her talk. I asked what prompted her to write Tomorrow?s Table, both the book and the blog. ?I was frustrated with the quality of information available to the public,? she responded. ?If scientists could directly communicate with the public, there would be less distortion of science.? Dr. Ronald fits blogging around her research, busy grant-writing schedule, and a revision of the book. This kind of communication is particularly important as the debate about the role of GE foods continues, more than 15 years after the introduction of the first GE crops.

I also asked Ronald how she started on the Sub1 project. ?David Mackill approached me about the project when he was still at UC Davis,? Dr. Ronald explains. Mackill knew of a long-abandoned strain of rice from India that could tolerate extended periods of submersion, and he had found the general region of the genome that conferred this trait. ?I had recently isolated XA21 using a positional cloning approach and Dave asked me to use the same approach to isolate Sub1. We thought if we could isolate the gene for submergence we could introduce it into varieties favored by farmers using marker assisted breeding or genetic engineering. We applied for a grant from the USDA who funded our work to isolate the gene. My laboratory led the cloning and demonstrated that Sub1A encoded a master regulator, a transcription factor.?

Mackill?s group led the breeding. He crossed the ancient strain with locally adapted rice varieties, and used markers from the Sub1 genomic region to track the introduction of Sub1 into the resulting progeny. The advantage of this approach is that he could select for progeny that carried the Sub1A gene. This ?precision breeding? process also reduces the transfer of undesirable traits, like reduced yield and poor taste, that are difficult to screen out through conventional breeding approaches. The gene isolation and precision breeding approach successfully produced Sub1 varieties that have been embraced by farmers in India and Bangladesh.

How does one get to be a scientist that saves lives? Issues of social justice and food security came up often throughout Dr. Ronald?s career path. Her key decision, she says, came at the transition from graduate student to post-doc. Initially, she focused on plant?microbe communication because she loved the science and also because she saw potential to reduce the use of pesticides. As she chose her post-doctoral position, she switched from working on tomatoes and peppers to working on rice. It was there, in a crop feeding half of the world?s people, that she saw even greater potential for her science to contribute to the public good and enhance food security.

As a Plant Biology graduate student myself, I had to ask what drew Ronald to plant sciences in the first place. The turning point, Ronald says, was an early moment when she discovered one could even build a career out of studying plants. Backpacking with her brother and a friend through California?s Sierra Nevada range, she came across a teacher and his student, botanists, with their noses buried in a field guide. Early exposure to science, and a family that fostered an appreciation for learning and the outdoors, are recurring themes among the life scientists that I know, myself included. Prof. Ronald?s efforts to reach out to the public herself carry on this tradition by increasing public exposure to science and scientists.

When I asked her advice for junior scientists interested in communicating with the public, Dr. Ronald replied: ?Of course, the love of science always comes first. Just practice communicating, keep reading and listening to other good science communicators. Think about your audience and keep dropping the technical lingo. It takes a lot of time, but there?s a great science writing community. After a while you just get sucked in.?

PCD Venture (Virgin Mobile)


The PCD Venture ($99.99) is aptly named, as it is something of a venture in and of itself. You may find yourself drawn in by the promise of an inexpensive, keyboarded Android smartphone?with Virgin Mobile's excellent plan pricing, but proceed with caution. This phone has a cramped keyboard, a disappointing camera, short battery life, and generally low-end performance. If you see this phone on the display rack, you'll almost certainly make a better choice if you venture elsewhere.

Design, Call Quality, and Plans
The Venture measures 4.6 by 2.3 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.3 ounces. It's nice and compact for a keyboarded smartphone, and feels relatively solid. It's made of matte gray plastic, with a plastic silver band outlining the face of the phone. It feels pretty classy?until you turn it on. PCD manages to fit in a 2.8-inch display, but at just 320-by-240 pixels, it looks dim and grainy. Even when held over a foot away from my face text looks jagged. There are four physical function keys right beneath the display, which sit on top of the phone's four-row QWERTY keyboard.

Although they are made of a nice, grippy plastic, the keyboard's keys are cramped and tiny. I found it difficult to type without accidentally mashing my finger into other keys, so typing long messages is no simple feat. Keyboarded phones are usually built for texting, but in this case you'd almost be better off with a touch-screen-only phone.

The Venture is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Reception is average (Virgin uses Sprint's network), but call quality is middling at best. Voices sound fine in the phone's earpiece, but have a tendency to clip in and out. Calls made with the phone sound fuzzy and computerized, with poor noise cancellation. The speakerphone sounds extremely muffled, and is not loud enough for outdoor use. Calls sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth without training. Battery life is poor at just 4 hours and 10 minutes of talk time.

As is the case with many phones from Virgin, the biggest selling point here is the carrier's inexpensive pricing plans. You can sign up for an unlimited data, text, and Web plan for as little as $35 per month with 300 voice minutes. 1200 minutes costs $45, and unlimited voice calling brings the price to $55 per month. If you're more of a message and data user than a talker, that $35 plan is hard to beat?especially considering that a data plan alone will cost you $30 on a carrier like Verizon Wireless, and for that price you're limited to 2GB of data per month! There's no tethering or hotspot mode, so you can't use a laptop with this connection. And Virgin does have one downside for heavy data users: Although you get unlimited data, your speeds will be significantly throttled after 2.5GB of usage per month.

OS and Performance
The Venture is running Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread). There's no word on an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), but I wouldn't count on it. PCD has modified the standard Android lock screen and added Mobile ID, but that's about it. There are five home screens you can swipe between that come preloaded with some useful apps and widgets, like a battery saver app. There's also some bloatware, but thankfully, almost all of it can be deleted. Mobile ID lets you customize your device with downloadable theme packs from Virgin that include applications, ringtones, wallpapers, and widgets.

The phone is powered by a severely outdated 600MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 MSM7627 processor. Even a year ago this was a low-end part, and it really shows. The Venture turned in some of the slowest benchmarks we've seen in recent memory; you can definitely count this phone out for high-end gaming. Even swiping between home screens can feel too taxing. You should be able to use most of the 400,000+ apps in the Google Play store, but they may not always run well.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The Venture comes with 144MB of free internal storage. There's also a microSD card slot beneath the phone's back cover with a preloaded 2 GB card; my 32 and 64GB cards worked fine as well. Music tracks sounded fine through both wired headphones as well as Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars). I was able to play AAC, MP3, OGG, and WAV test files, but not FLAC or WMA. Standalone video support is spotty. The Venture plays MP4 and H.264 test files at resolutions up to 800-by-480, but not AVI or XviD files.

The 2-megapixel camera comes equipped with an LED flash, but performance is poor. There's a long, 1.4 second shutter delay, and no matter the lighting, photos show average color but are generally soft and lacking in detail. The camcorder follows suit; it records small, grainy videos at a low-resolution 352-by-288-pixels. In both cases, you'd be much better served by a cheap digital camera.

While the PCD Venture gets you all the trappings of a smartphone at an inexpensive price, it just doesn't do anything particularly well. The Samsung Replenish?($99.99, 3 stars) over on Boost gets you the same keyboarded form factor and similarly inexpensive plan pricing, but has better voice quality, a more usable keyboard, and boasts an eco-friendly build. The LG Optimus Slider?($199.99, 3.5 stars), meanwhile, costs $100 more, but gets you a larger, sharper display, and a roomy, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It's worth it.
