Ancient Iceman 'had brown eyes'

New clues have emerged in what could be described as the world's oldest murder case: that of Oetzi the "Iceman", whose 5,300-year-old body was discovered frozen in the Italian Alps in 1991.

Oetzi's full genome has now been reported in Nature Communications.

It reveals that he had brown eyes, "O" blood type, was lactose intolerant, and was predisposed to heart disease.

They also show him to be the first documented case of infection by a Lyme disease bacterium.

Analysis of series of anomalies in the Iceman's DNA also revealed him to be more closely related to modern inhabitants of Corsica and Sardinia than to populations in the Alps, where he was unearthed.

'Really exciting'

The study reveals the fuller genetic picture as laid out in the nuclei of Oetzi's cells.

This nuclear DNA is both rarer and typically less well-preserved than the DNA within mitochondria, the cell's "power plants", which also contain DNA.

Oetzi's mitochondrial DNA had already revealed some hints of his origins when it was fully sequenced in 2008.

Albert Zink, from the Eurac Institute for Mummies and the Iceman in Bolzano, Italy, said the nuclear DNA study was a great leap forward in one of the most widely studied specimens in science.

"We've been studying the Iceman for 20 years. We know so many things about him - where he lived, how he died - but very little was known about his genetics, the genetic information he was carrying around," he told BBC News.

He was carrying around a "haplotype" that showed his ancestors most likely migrated from the Middle East as the practice of formal agriculture became more widespread.

It is probably this period of transition to an agrarian society that explains Oetzi's lactose intolerance.

Prof Zink said that next-generation "whole-genome" sequencing techniques made the analysis possible.

"Whole-genome sequencing allows you to sequence the whole DNA out of one sample; that wasn't possible before in the same way.

"This was really exciting and I think it's just the start for a longer study on this level. We still would like to learn more from this data - we've only just started to analyse it."

Some people see it as a good way to showcase personality, writing skills, or knowledge of the company. Still others see it as bulky and a waste of time because recruiters aren?t going to read it anyway. I?m not sure who is correct, but I can give you some tips to increase your cover letter?s visibility. Keep in mind that the resume is still the first thing that we review, but a good cover letter can supplement your experience and personality. Some ideas to keep in mind:

Apply only to relevant roles. If you are qualified for a job, the recruiter will know and will want to look at a cover letter. Use this opportunity to highlight a few points from the job description that closely match your background.
Show some personality. You don?t have to fill your cover letter with jokes or witty sayings, but you should give us an insight into who you are not just what you can do. Don?t just list random things for the sake of being irreverent; rather connect a hobby or interest to a quality that would make you a good employee.
Demonstrate?your knowledge of the company and ?the role. Recruiters can spot a generic cover letter within a few seconds. Add a few sentences that show your knowledge of the company or ability to do the job. Bullet points are fine, and the more concise you can be the better.
Don?t worry about formatting. At Groupon, and other large companies, all your materials will be stored in our resume database, so don?t worry about fancy formatting or colors. Different recruiters work on different roles, and multiple people will have access to your resume. Don?t waste time trying to figure out a specific contact, because it really doesn?t matter to us. LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Actress Sean Young was arrested after a scuffle with a security guard at the official post-Oscars party, police said Monday.

Young, 52, was placed under citizen's arrest at the Governors Ball at 9:25 p.m. Sunday after the dispute, police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said.

"She was trying to get into the party and couldn't get in," he said.

Young, who has starred in "Blade Runner" and "Stripes," was booked at the Hollywood police station for investigation of misdemeanor battery. She posted $20,000 bail and was released early Monday.

The actress, who was wearing a ball gown, was taken into custody quickly, said Tom Januszewski, an Associated Press business executive who witnessed the incident. He said he saw a guard subdue Young by placing his forearm on her neck and head while other guards placed her in handcuffs and led her away.

Young didn't speak as she was being led away, Januszewski said.

"It happened incredibly fast," he said.

The actress tried to crash the Vanity Fair Oscar party in 2006. She entered rehabilitation for alcohol abuse in 2008 after she was removed from the Directors Guild of America awards.

A voicemail message left early Monday for Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences publicist Tarrah Lee Curtis wasn't immediately returned. A phone message left for Young's agent, David Shapira, also was not immediately returned.

Should you make changes to your 401K plan / IRA plan ...

(February 2012) Your 401K plan probably provides you with a number of investment choices, which primarily consist of mutual funds. Those mutual funds invest in stocks, bonds or a combination of the two. Way back when you started the plan, you selected where you wanted funds to be allocated.

To make everything simple, lets say you allocated 60% to Fidelity?s Magellan Fund (FMAGX) and 40% to PIMCO?s Total Return Fund (PTTAX). Essentially, you would be investing your money 60% in stocks and 40% in bonds.

Those two funds did not have the same performance for the last 3 months. In general, stocks and funds that invest in them have had a tremendous run during last few months. In particular, the FMAGX has returned over 20%. Bonds have not done nearly as well. For example, the PIMCO Total Return Fund is up around 4.5%.

As a result of these gains, you may no longer have 60% of your portfolio in stocks and 40% in bonds. The value of the stock funds that you hold may have increased relative to the value of your bonds, so you may now have 70% of your portfolio in stocks and 30% in bonds. This is were automatic portfolio re-balancing comes in. When you set up your 401K or IRA and allocated your portfolio between funds, you may have selected that on a periodic basis (monthly, quarterly or annually) that your portfolio get re-balanced to the original asset allocation (ie 60% stocks, 40% bonds). For most people, this would mean that the some of the funds would be moved from the stock fund to the bond fund.

Is re-balancing a good thing?

Pros of rebalancing

A balance between stocks and bonds reduces portfolio volatility. Having all your funds in one asset class or mutual fund means there is a greater chance that you could have a big sudden loss. Imagine owning an all stock portfolio in 2008, 2000 or 1987. At those points in time, you would have been better off having a combination of stocks and bonds. Everyone thinks they know when the stock market is going to tank. However, you can count the number of people that called the last crash with less than 10 fingers.

Cons of re-balancing

A number of super-heavy hitters, such as Larry Fink, have suggested that we are in for a long-term bear market in bonds. The FED has been actively intervening the market reducing yields and have pushed bond prices sky high. In the long-term, bonds have now where to go but down.

If you agree with the second view-point, you might consider changing your asset allocation.

Perhaps one reason for its growth is that trust funds and foundations are not exclusive to the domain of the elite and wealthy anymore. In fact, they are fast becoming a sensible tax efficient strategy to managing any individuals? savings?especially if you are thinking of the stowing away some money for your loved ones and their futures.

Whether you?re objectives lie in succession planning, asset protection or charitable giving, it?s important to have the correct structure from the outset. The most common structures are discussed below and it should give you an idea of whether these are the right products for you.

1 ? Trusts
Dating back to the days of the Crusades, trusts are one of the oldest ways to ensure assets are delivered to their intended recipients. In its simplest form, a trust is formed when someone places their assets in the legal custody of someone else for the benefit of a third party. Using the jargon, a Settlor gives legal control of their assets to a Trustee for the benefit of a clearly defined Beneficiary. Trusts are commonly used for charitable giving and for many years have been utilised by a variety of organisations to provide benefit for either their employees or for other needy beneficiaries. Trusts are governed and utilised in common law jurisdictions, and historically the most popular jurisdictions are those where there is the most case law history, such as Jersey or Guernsey.

Trusts are a very powerful tool for estate planning and when used correctly, can minimize tax exposure and ensure that your assets are redistributed in accordance with your wishes. Privacy and asset protection are key advantages of a trust, for example the terms of a will are in the public domain, and trusts are not, also if a Settlor is in a partnership with unlimited liability these assets are out of the reach of his/her creditors.

Would-be philanthropists would typically opt for charitable trusts, and these are commonly used in the UK. They differ from a normal trust on the basis that the link between the trustees and the beneficiaries is broken, meaning that the beneficiaries have no legal standing against the trustees. Charitable trusts also qualify for HMRC advantages on the basis that it has a charitable purpose and public benefit.

2 ? Foundations
Like trusts, foundations offer privacy, succession planning and a high level of asset protection, but they also afford a higher level of control to the Founder. Where the interaction of a Settlor with the operation of a trust may have a detrimental impact on the discretionary nature of that trust, the use of Protector in a foundation structure provides a more hands on role for those concerned about the potentially unlimited powers of Trustees to control assets.

Foundations are primarily civil law tools, used where trusts may not be recognised or deemed appropriate. They originated in the early 20th century in Liechtenstein and are now commonly offered in jurisdictions including Panama, Bahamas, Dutch Antilles and Isle of Man. They have a special legal status based on civil law, which mix the legal components of a trust and a company. They have their own self-governing legal status, but they don?t have any shareholders.

INDIANAPOLIS -- DeVier Posey, Mike Adams and Dan "Boom" Herron are still considered pariahs by some Ohio State fans, although they inspire far less vitriol than Terrelle Pryor.

But their part in the memorabilia sales scandal that shook the OSU football program to its foundation and resulted in the forced resignation of coach Jim Tressel barely moved the NFL's seismic needle. Pryor used the supplemental draft to find a job with the Oakland Raiders. When it comes to the status of Posey, Adams and Herron in the April 26-28 draft, coaches at the NFL Scouting Combine said it won't weigh heavily in their evaluations.

"You don't get a death sentence with one mistake," Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith said Thursday at Lucas Oil Stadium. "You look a little bit deeper into exactly what they did. A lot of times young people make mistakes. We're not going to kick anybody off the team."

Former Browns coach Romeo Crennel, now holding the same title with the Kansas City Chiefs, doesn't consider the OSU players in the same light as prospects who have had run-ins with the law.

"Being suspended because you're signing autographs and getting money for it or selling your helmets or things like that, that can be looked at as a youthful transgression and those guys not quite understanding the ramifications," Crennel said Saturday. "That doesn't mean they're bad people, that doesn't mean they're bad football players. What you have to determine is 'Did they learn from their experience and will they not repeat the transgression?"'

That's key in the mind of Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz, who said they sometimes bring up incidents from high school during their pre-draft interviews.

"Any player that's dealt with anything like that, it's more about how they're going forward with it," Schwartz said.

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said the league has two hot-button off-the-field issues. They have nothing to do with selling rings (Adams and Posey) or a jersey, pants and shoes (Herron).

"One of them is drug use and the other one is violence, especially against women," Mayock said during a conference call earlier this month. "I don't think this is any big deal at all. I think the bigger thing is what kind of football players are they?"

In that evaluation, it's their loss of playing time that could prove costly two months from now. Wide receiver Posey missed 10 games, five for selling memorabilia and five more for receiving excessive pay for a summer job. Running back Herron sat out six games, one a summer pay sanction, and left tackle Adams was docked five for Tattoogate. All could have used those games to improve, especially their lack of consistency, and might slip in the draft because of it.

Pro Football Weekly projects Adams as a first- or second-round pick and Herron and Posey as fifth- or sixth-rounders. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. thinks Herron is a third-round talent but believes he could go three rounds later than he should because of the time he lost.

Herron said he'd learned he must make better decisions, that likely driven home by Tressel's departure. As Mayock pointed out, lifting 225 pounds a mere 19 times when you stand 6-foot-7 and weigh 323 pounds is "not acceptable for that position, not even close," especially when some defensive backs lift that many.

On draft day, NFL general managers might consider that Adams' most egregious transgression.

MILAN (AP) ? Silvio Berlusconi's corruption trial raced toward a verdict Saturday, but any decision was likely to be rendered moot because of the statute of limitations on the charge.

The former Italian prime minister is accused of paying a British lawyer David Mills $600,000 to lie during two 1990s trials to shield Berlusconi and his Fininvest holding company from charges related to the billionaire media mogul's business dealings.

The three-judge panel began its deliberations after Berlusconi's defense made its closing statements, arguing that Berlusconi should be cleared of corruption. A verdict was expected within hours.

Prosecutors have demanded a five-year sentence.

The court could decide to issue a ruling on the merits, or it could calculate that the statute of limitations on the charge has already expired, as the defense has argued, throwing out the case.

Berlusconi, 75, stepped down as premier in November after failing to come up with convincing reforms to help Italy exit from the sovereign debt crisis, was absent from the courtroom.

Berlusconi issued a statement Friday railing against magistrates for the "many trials" against him, and saying that he doesn't remember having met Mills.

"Mills was one of many lawyers abroad that occasionally worked for the Fininvest group. I don't recall ever having met him," Berlusconi said.

He added that Mills had received the $600,000 from an Italian arms dealer for some legal work and had made up the story that the money had been a gift from Fininvest employee, who had since died, to avoid paying a 50 percent tax on earnings.

By prosecutors' calculations, the statute of limitations on the case expires by July, but even that time frame would not allow for two levels of appeal required to finalize any verdict. The defense claims the statute of limitations has already expired.

The court will have to make its own calculations, and decide if it can still issue a finding in the initial trial.

The ongoing trial has been suspended many times due to Berlusconi's obligations as premier and during a period when parliament had granted him immunity, complicating the calculation. In Italy, the clock on the statute of limitations continues to tick even after a trial begins.

Mills was convicted in 2009 on bribery charges; the conviction was overturned by Italy's highest court after the statute of limitations expired.

The corruption trial is one of several Berlusconi is currently facing in Milan, including charges that he paid an underage Moroccan teenager to have sex with him, then used his influence to cover it up. Both he and the young woman deny the charges.

Both the corruption charge and the charge of using his influence to cover up a crime carry an additional penalty that would bar Berlusconi from again seeking public office, but that would only kick in if a guilty verdict is confirmed on the final appeal.

Berlusconi has faced dozens of trials in Milan, mostly for his business dealings. He has either been acquitted or seen the charges expire under the statute of limitations.

Ancient Maya doom teaches climate lesson

Scientists have long assumed that the Classic Maya civilization was done in more than a millennium ago by a series of droughts, but now they say natural records suggest those?droughts were "modest," with no more than a 40 percent reduction in rainfall. And that, in turn, suggests that similarly modest climate changes over the next century could have a not-so-modest effect.

"What seems like a minor reduction in water availability may lead to important, long-lasting problems ... Today, we have the benefit of awareness, and we should act accordingly," Martin Medina-Elizalde, a researcher at the Yucatan Center for Scientific Research in Mexico, said in a news release.

The study ? conducted by Medina-Elizalde and Eelco Rohling, a colleague from the University of Southampton ? appears in this week's issue of the journal Science. It addresses one of the big mysteries of Maya history: What caused a civilization that dominated areas of present-day Guatemala and Mexico in the year 800 to collapse by the year 1000? Deforestation and drought have figured prominently as the prime suspects, but just how dire did those droughts get?

To shed additional light on the mystery, the two climate experts analyzed chemicals in lake sediments, marine shells and cave stalagmites to track variations in rainfall. For example, the ratio of oxygen-16 to oxygen-18 in a particular layer of mineral can tell you how much rainfall fell during the season when the mineral was laid down. Such variations can be read year by year, like tree rings.

The researchers found that there was indeed a deficit in rainfall in the period between the years 800 and 1000. But that deficit was modest, amounting to a 25 to 40 percent reduction in the drought years. Medina-Elizalde and Rohling assume that the droughts took the form of reductions in the frequency and intensity of tropical storms during the summer.

"Summer was the main season for cultivation and replenishment of Mayan freshwater storage systems, and there are no rivers in the Yucatan lowlands," Rohling said in the news release. "Societal disruptions and abandonment of cities are likely consequences of critical water shortages, especially because there seems to have been a rapid repetition of multiyear droughts."

In an email, Medina-Elizalde told me that "these droughts may not have been strong enough to cause by themselves the collapse of the civilization, but they were likely strong enough and persistent enough ... to cause major sociopolitical disruptions that ultimately led to the final outcome."

"Let's imagine that today, from one year to another, major cities can no longer supply fresh water to a third of their populations. ... With no freshwater pumping systems, how would we keep producing agricultural produce and supplying fresh water to support the entire populations of these cities?" he wrote.

Today, much of the Yucatan Peninsula's rural population still relies on summer rainfall to support their crops. Medina-Elizalde said access to fresh water isn't so much of a problem, thanks to modern pumping systems. But he noted that lower-than-average summer rains still "have fairly dire consequences" for local farmers.

The current models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predict that there could be annual rainfall reductions of up to 50 percent in the Yucatan Peninsula by the end of this century, Medina-Elizalde said. He and his colleagues are studying how such reductions might affect freshwater supplies in the region.

"Some climate models suggest that local vegetation does contribute to increase rainfall significantly ... which would suggest that by preserving the forests, we are mitigating the impacts of climate change," he said. "Definitely, local governments need to start making serious efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change in light of the forecast for the next decades."
