Apple Denies That iPhones Store User Locations
Apple Inc. denied Wednesday that iPhones store a record of their users' movements for up to a year and blamed privacy concerns partly on a misunderstanding.
A data file publicized by security researchers last week doesn't store users' locations, but a list of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers in their general area, the company said. It promised software fixes to address concerns over that file.
The data, downloaded from Apple, help the phone figure out its location without having to listen for faint signals from GPS satellites. That means navigation applications can present the phone's location faster and more accurately, Apple said.
Apple said the data are stored for up to a year because of a software error. The company said there's no need to store data for more than seven days, and a software update in the next few weeks will limit the amount of data in that file.
The iPhone will also stop backing up the file to the user's computer, a practice that raised some concerns. Computers are much more vulnerable to remote hacking attempts than are phones.
A third planned fix is to stop downloading the data to phones that have all "Location Services" turned off, Apple said, and to encrypt the file on those where it's on.
"Users are confused, partly because creators of this new technology (including Apple) have not provided enough education about these issues to date," Apple said in its statement.
Wednesday's statement was Apple's first comprehensive response to the most recent allegations. Apple had revealed the nature of the location file in a letter to Congress last summer after an earlier round of questions about its location-tracking practices.
The file drew new attention last week, after a report from researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden at a technology conference in Santa Clara, Calif.
Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), questioned whether the practice was legal under a federal law governing the use of location information for commercial purposes, if consumers weren't properly informed.
In Wednesday's statement, Apple reiterated that while iPhones regularly transmit their location to Apple, they do so only anonymously, and the company isn't able to track users. It can also transmit a user's location to companies that buy ads through Apple's iAds advertising system, but only if the user approves giving the current location to a particular ad.
Apple shares fell $1.70, or 0.5 percent, to $348.72 in morning trading Wednesday.

Last April, a volcanic eruption in Iceland sent a cloud of ash billowing toward Europe. That ash was potentially hazardous for aircraft, and authorities decided to ground all flights ? inconveniencing tens of thousands of travelers ? rather than risk an accident. A new study suggests that this was the right decision.
Susan Stipp, a professor of nanotechnology at the University of Copenhagen, was one of the people whose plans were frustrated by the volcanic cloud. She had colleagues who needed to get home to Denmark, and samples were delayed en route from Scotland.
Stipp wondered if officials had acted wisely in closing the airspace over Europe, and because she studies tiny particles like the ones in volcanic ash, she was in a position to find out.
"I called my friend and colleague Siggi Gislason in Iceland, and we agreed to get some ash and see if we could do something," Stipp said.
Gislason and some of his colleagues from the University of Iceland drove from Reykjavik to the foot of the volcano and collected some ash. When planes started flying again, they sent the samples to Stipp in Denmark, where Stipp analyzed them.

One thing became clear at once ? closing the airspace was the right decision.
Stipp said there were several reasons the ash particles from the Iceland volcano were so dangerous. First, they were particularly fine-grained.
"Those fine particles are extremely sharp compared to typical ash, which is usually somewhat more rounded," Stipp said.
They were also extremely hard, making them abrasive to airplane wings, bodies and windows. That abrasion can make it impossible to see out the cockpit window.
Finally, because of their small size, the particles were able to rise high in the atmosphere and spread great distances, where they posed a particular threat to jet engines.
"If they're tiny particles they can melt quickly," Stipp said. "Then they condense on the cooler parts of the engine, and cause them to fail."
Obviously, this research, which appears in the current issue of the journal PNAS, comes long after decisions about air travel had been made. But Stipp says this kind of analysis could help authorities make informed decisions the next time a plume of ash intersects a busy airline travel corridor.

The first is to ask, is real estate appraising the right business for my personality? Important traits of real estate appraisers (or real property appraisers as they are also known) are as follows:

? Excellent communication and social skills for customer interactions
? Independent self-starter
The second key concept is to analyze the time commitment. In the state of Oregon, the Appraiser Certification and Licensure Board (ACLB) licenses and regulates real estate appraisers and real estate appraiser assistants. There are four different types of certificates and different requirements for each level. The first title is the real estate appraiser assistant, following with three statuses of real estate appraiser licenses: State Licensed Appraiser, State Certified Residential Appraiser, and State Certified General Appraiser. The specific differences of these types can be found at the ACLB web site www.oregonaclb.org. For a more general idea, the Licensed Appraiser requires the least education and experience but with the maximum limit on what they have the authority to appraise. In comparison, the highest level is the General Appraiser who has no limits, but requires the most hours of education and experience.
The state of Oregon also requires each potential licensed real estate appraiser to pass a state exam. These exams can be taken at a variety of locations throughout Oregon and are electronic with immediate test results given. Each individual is given three opportunities within six months to pass the test.
The following table briefly outlines Oregon?s hours? commitment for each Real Estate Appraiser certification and license:

Educational hours must be broken down by specific courses as outlined at the Oregon Appraiser Certification and Licensure Board. There are a wide variety of prospects to where a potential real estate appraiser can gain these educational hours. Community Colleges, Appraisal Schools and Real Estate Schools all offer options of both web/computer based learning or true classroom style courses. How one decides which type to chose will depend on their personal time constraints. One important point to consider is the importance in the field of real estate to create a network and find a mentor. Therefore, if one does enroll in classes on line, they should also register for some in a classroom setting or network via other real estate associations.
The final question relates to the expense; can I afford the cost of becoming a real estate appraiser? There are three main expenses to explore:
? The cost of the education
? The application and license fees
? The lost wages from school and experience building time
The cost of the education will depend greatly on your choice of institution. The variety of options from the less expensive Community College courses to the pricier private real estate school, will give one the ability to structure a plan within their budget. The application and licensing fees are set and will ultimately depend on the kind of certification and at what time you process your application. The lost wages is also a very personal expense and will depend on one?s private situation. If time off from the workforce is a concern, there are some paid internships for the experience hours. These are harder to come by than the volunteer options, but once again it will depend on your personal situation to decide what will work for your household.
In conclusion, the career of a real estate appraiser in Oregon can bring some excellent opportunities for the right individual. Many appraisers have very flexible schedules and can work at home part of the time. As the demand grows in Oregon for homes, along with the consistently lower mortgage rates, there is currently a steady amount of work for the real estate appraiser. Appraisers can specialize in residential, commercial or agricultural and many have multiple specialties. Some are independent businesses; work for appraisal companies or even for large financial institutions. Once the licensing process is complete the pay is good and the work is steadily in demand.

There's a very funny comment attached to yesterday's post about London, in which someone points out that apparently, some media outlet or other "did a minute and a half on the vacuuming of Westminster Abbey." To all who lament this particular kind of fixation on finding an angle ? ANY angle ? on which to hang a story, I say: I am with you. Whether it's the "it turns out that this international incident that took place in Paris hit close to home for someone right here in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin!" story on the local news, or, yes, the vacuuming of Westminster Abbey, it can be trying.
But let me posit something else, which is that it wouldn't be unreasonable to give people a break for looking forward to watching the wedding.
Look, you can blame Disney for Disney princesses, but you cannot blame Disney for princesses. Storytelling about princesses ? or girls who grow up to meet princes ? go back a lot farther than Disney, or cartoons, or television, or the all-in all-the-time environment that brings you "The Abbey Vacuumed: A Special Investigation."
Storytelling about princes and princesses ? and their equivalents ? goes back considerably longer than television and is not a product of American media. If you don't believe me, ask Andromeda.
Moreover, I keep hearing that (some) Americans are more interested in this wedding than (many) actual British people, which I'm sure is true, and which makes sense as well. Let me ask this: How often do you read about the British monarchy from the incredibly America-focused American popular-culture machine? I would venture to say that the answer is probably that you don't hear about them all that often. Yes, for a few years, there was the occasional Prince Harry Is At It Again tale, and back when Diana was alive, she was obviously heavily covered, both in life and in death.
But these people, the ones getting married? William? How many times have you actually heard William's voice? If you heard it on the radio, would you recognize it? I doubt I would. I certainly wouldn't recognize Kate Middleton's. Compared to our own celebrities, who are always popping up on late-night television and in magazines to talk about themselves, we barely know these people. And that, it seems to me, is a bit of a relief, particularly if you don't usually experience it.
American media has a chokingly chatty relationship with the famous. They talk constantly to us. They're interviewed, they're on DVD extras, they're making their own perfumes, whatever. And sometimes, this is fantastic ? I love it that actors go on Fresh Air and talk about their work for an hour at a time. But everything has ups and downs, and the trade-off here is that what you don't get with this approach is any sort of remove that allows the romanticizing of public figures in the way you can romanticize them when they talk a lot less. This is not to condone the romanticizing of celebrities as a good thing, but again, it's not something that's been ginned up for this wedding, and it far predates Ryan Seacrest.
The paparazzi, of course, follows the royal family doggedly; we need not repeat the stories of that, I don't think. But they don't chatter back all the time. They'll do an interview now and then, but for the most part, they're not yip-yapping in public about every thing that comes into their heads. It's kind of quaint, when you read regularly about celebrity sex tapes, to see people who issue official palace statements when they have something to say instead of calling TMZ.
It's perfectly logical that this event has raised questions about the monarchy and whether it should continue to exist, and about lavish ceremonies during bad economic times, and about whether "The Abbey Sucked Clean Of Lint" should really be dominating the news. Absolutely fair questions, absolutely.
But if you find yourself saying, "I cannot imagine why anyone is interested in this story of young love involving a handsome prince who has experienced terrible adversity and now seems to have found love with a beautiful young woman who undoubtedly never expected to become royalty," try to pause on that bafflement and think about how how much sense it makes. It's not necessarily correct or brutally rational to be touched by all this, and if we knew more about it, it would undoubtedly lose some of its luster, and for actual British people who have to contend with their own form of government and the consequences thereof, the frustration makes more sense to me.
But the buttons a royal wedding pushes at some level were not installed by E! and are not unique to crass American consumerism. There's a reason why royalty, going back as long as royalty has existed, frequently goes hand in hand with pageantry. (This despite the fact that British royal weddings specifically have certainly not always been the hootenannys you see today.) Enjoying a certain amount of ceremony and ritual ? big dresses, military uniforms, horses in formation, music in a chapel ? is not a sign that the end of civilization is upon us. In fact, it has a fairly long history as part of any number of civilizations that did not have cable.
Don't get me wrong: There is an entirely reasonable debate about how much fixation on which aspects of an event like this makes any sense at all. But being utterly confused about how a big fancy event centered around a love story between two young and pretty people gets anyone's attention seems a little silly to me.

The first mouse, an experimental pointing device, was invented in 1964 by Douglas Englebart, who was then working at the Stanford Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. Englebart?s original design underwent a number of changes before emerging as part of the Star workstation, a commercial system which was notable for a few other firsts as well: the graphical user interface, and the use of folders, file servers and e-mail.
The modern mouse is available in a number of variations, each designed to be integrated with a specific operating system or to fulfill a specific function.

Will Apple's enterprise success spark a business cloud offering?

With little fanfare, Apple announced the demise of its Xserve line of 1U rack-mount servers back in January. You can't really blame it -- sales were tiny and Apple never really marketed Xserves at all. I miss them, though, because the last generation was a line of 1U servers done the Apple way with Apple fit and finish, including an optional inboard 128GB SSD that freed up all four hot-swap disk bays in the front. Nice.
But with the Xserve gone, it's good-bye enterprise and hello more iStuff for consumers, right? Not so fast.

All that iStuff is revolutionizing business computing, with so many executives sporting iPads, iPhones, and iWhatevers these days. In many places they've broken the CrackBerry habit completely, and BES servers that used to be extremely busy are idling forlornly, still stubbornly proxying Web traffic to an equally forlorn BlackBerry Storm wielded by an executive who has grown to hate it.
Now more than ever, Macs are popping up all over the corporate landscape. I personally know of dozens of cases where users eschew their corporate desktop in favor of their personal MacBook Pro. Naturally, this can give IT security admins fits because they don't fit into the Windows XP/7 box, but when the tide is rising, you have to rise with it. In fact, in some large companies users can get a corporate-issue Mac as easily as they can get a Dell or HP. Somewhat surprisingly, this number includes IBM, Oracle, and Citrix Systems, or so I've been told.
Then there are companies developing private apps for iOS devices to do everything from data input to shop floor monitoring. Apple has backed into the enterprise on the client side -- and made more inroads than it ever could have with pallet upon pallet of Xserves.
It makes me wonder: Are all these business clients a herd of little Trojan horses? Could Apple be preparing a play to capitalize on the traction it's already enjoying? These days, that could easily come in the form of a set of cloud services, removing the need to ship any hardware.

William and Kate's Wedding Dress Rehearsal Goes Off Without a Hitch...or a Bride
The big day isn't until Friday, but Londoners who were awake in the middle of the night got a preview of what to expect on Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding.
The royal wedding dress rehearsal took place in the wee hours this morning and featured more than 1,000 soldiers, horses, carriages, chaffeured Bentley and RAF flyover.
And by the looks of things in the video above, everything seemed to proceed perfectly, except for two conspiciously missing things...

The bride and groom didn't attend the dress rehearsal, but they did use a practice Kate for the festivities.
A "pretty brunette" emerged from the exact car that will carry Kate on Friday, prompting cheers from the crowd before they realized it was just her stand in.
And naturally, her double gave no hint as to what the mysterious wedding dress will look like. She was wearing pants and a black sweater.
The number one goal for the security guards will be to protect the future princess, while still ensuring the public can get a clear view of her.
Priorities, people!
Kate was apparently busy last night with another important test run of her own: how to wear her coif.
She was snapped Tuesday evening wearing her hair swept back in the car with sister Pippa.

Today, is the day for Easter bonnets, but they won't hold a candle to the crowns at Westminster Abbey this Friday. At the royal wedding, the hats will be on display as much as the bride herself. Whether simple feather arrangements or outlandish towers of flowers, hats are works of art, and they're popular both in the U.K. and in the U.S.
Luke Song of Mr. Song Millinery designed Aretha Franklin's bowed gray chapeau for President Obama's inauguration. He's at member station WDET in Detroit. Welcome to the program.
Mr. LUKE SONG (Mr. Song Millinery): Well, thanks for having me. Happy Easter, everybody.
HANSEN: Happy Easter. You must be exhausted. How many of your own Easter bonnets are being worn today?
Mr. SONG: Oh goodness. It's in the thousands.
HANSEN: Has anyone requested you millinery services for Friday's royal wedding?
Mr. SONG: Yes. We've been keeping very busy for that actually.
HANSEN: A lot of veils this year?
Mr. SONG: Not as much, but especially a lot of the younger girls, which I'm very surprised to find that they're going for the lot of traditional veils and it looks really young and hip, in my opinion. I guess fashion always comes in circles. And Kate Middleton had a great effect on the fashion. Those, like, profile hats that she's pictured wearing.
HANSEN: So, it's on, like, half of her head. It's tilted in such a way that it kind of covers a bit of her face.
Mr. SONG: Oh, yes. I've been making a lot of those.
HANSEN: Wow. You're going to be watching?
Mr. SONG: Oh definitely.
HANSEN: What are you going to be looking for, aside from your own hats?
Mr. SONG: Just very bold styles. An event like that kind emboldens the rest of the people, I think, for them to wear something that is a little what they consider every day to be a little risque.
HANSEN: Well, this is high season for hats. I mean, we've got the Kentucky Derby coming up and Mother's Day. What role does a hat play in an outfit?
Mr. SONG: Well, I think you're not dressed until you have a hat on. Also, I think it defines a person. If you just remember back to the inauguration, Aretha Franklin, nobody can tell what she had on, you know, below her neck, but they absolutely remember the hat. So, the hat's really become the focal point of any event.
HANSEN: Luke Song is the designer for Mr. Song Millinery in Southfield, Michigan, and he joined us from WDET in Detroit. Thank you so much and happy Easter once again.

Two War Photographers On Their Injuries, Ethics

Combat photographers Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros were killed Wednesday in Libya, and two more photographers were seriously injured. On Thursday's Fresh Air, we air an interview taped Tuesday with combat photographers Greg Marinovich and Joao Silva, both of whom have been seriously injured in the field.
Marinovich has been shot and wounded four times while covering conflicts in South Africa and Afghanistan. Silva lost both of his legs in a land mine explosion in Afghanistan last October while working as a contract photographer for The New York Times.
Silva has photographed wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Balkans, the Middle East and southern Africa. On the day he stepped on the mine in Afghanistan, he was embedded with a unit of the 4th Infantry Division and a New York Times reporter. Two other people and a minesweeping dog walked through the area where the mine was just before he approached.
To intercede, to change the picture is unethical. To intercede at the cost of doing your job as a journalist, I think that's a personal choice you make. And I have no issue with people on the other side of that divide.
"I was like third man in line, and I just happened to put my foot maybe a little more to the left or a little more to the right, and bam," he tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross, speaking from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he is recovering. "Basically I heard the metallic sounds ? bang ? and got thrown over. My initial reaction was to ask the guys around me for help. The guys around me were a little bit dazed from the explosion, but they grabbed hold of me pretty quickly and dragged me away from the kill zone."
While he was being dragged away, Silva continued to snap photographs. He asked the New York Times reporter, Carlotta Gall, for a satellite phone to call his wife.
"I called my wife. I told my wife, because I had seen my legs were gone, I told my wife, 'Listen. Legs are gone. But I think I'm going to be OK. I think I'm going to live.' "
Silva's Recovery
Soon after, a medevac helicopter landed on the scene. Silva was transported first to Germany and then to Walter Reed, where he spent three weeks in the intensive care unit. In February, he took his first steps at the hospital using two prosthetic legs.
"I walk between parallel bars and use a walker when I walk longer distances," he says. "So I'm not quite balancing on my own yet, but I'm sure that will come in time."
But Silva has also suffered medical setbacks. After surgery to repair his rectal cavity and urethra, he picked up an infection and has been battling constant fatigue and pressure.
"The side of my face feels like it's the size of a melon," he says. "My eye's completely closed. There's a lot of pressure from the swelling. My white blood count has risen, so the rest of my body does feel it."
Silva faces more reconstructive surgeries to repair his urinary tract and intestinal cavity and will very likely spend several more months at Walter Reed. He hasn't picked up a camera since the incident.
"Right now, I'm focusing on my recovery. I'm either wheelchair-bound or I'm lying on my back," he says. "It's really difficult to shoot in those kind of circumstances. Bottom line, I don't feel the need. I don't want to. I have no need to. Maybe later on, closer to the end of my rehab when I'm a bit more mobile. And I might do it before everything closes up. But right now, no. I need to be more mobile."

Marinovich has visited Silva several times in the hospital. The two photographers are good friends and two of the four members of "The Bang-Bang Club," a group of photographers who documented the final bloody years of South African apartheid before the 1994 elections.
Marinovich stopped shooting in the field after his fourth gunshot injury, which took place in Afghanistan. He had previously been shot three times in South Africa.
"After Afghanistan, I realized that this was just not productive," he tells Fresh Air's Gross. "After several weeks [after being shot for the fourth time], it just dawned on me that I don't want to do this anymore, and I don't want to be injured anymore."
In 1994, Marinovich was shot and his friend Ken Oosterbroek, another member of the Bang-Bang Club, was killed while covering a battle in South Africa.

"I thought [the bullet] had gone through me," Marinovich says. "Nobody wanted to look. I wasn't breathing properly and all sorts of things because my lung had been punctured. And there were a couple of other wounds, rather embarrassingly, in my buttocks and in my hand."
In his memoir, The Bang-Bang Club: Snapshots from a Hidden War, which he co-wrote with Silva, Marinovich describes thinking his injury in South Africa was it.
"I had paid my dues," he wrote. "I had atoned for the dozens of close calls that had always left someone else injured or dead while I emerged from the scenes of mayhem unscathed, picture in hand, having committed the crime of being the 'lucky voyeur.' "
And that sensation of guilt, Marinovich says, stayed with him while covering other war zones.
"Just seeing someone ? especially a mother over a young child or a young fighter or a young civilian who's being killed ? and that look they give you as you come to photograph them, while you're kind of apologizing about photographing," he says. "And people want you photographing to show what's happened, but that look of hatred ? that sometimes you get from a mother ? is just so disturbing."
Marinovich received the Pulitzer Prize in 1991 for Spot News Photography. He later became the Associated Press' chief photographer in the Middle East. Joao Silva has received numerous awards, including the World Press Photo award. Silva and Marinovich collaborated on the The Bang-Bang Club book, which has now been made into a film starring Ryan Phillippe and Taylor Kitsch. The film tells the stories of the four combat photographers who risked their lives to capture the atrocities committed during apartheid.

I've always wanted to show those that are fortunate enough not to live in a war zone the realities or certain realities of war zones, which is ultimately the point. We go out and we expose ourselves believing somehow that we have an impact on society."

"Journalism is not a profession. It's a craft. So you don't need any training to become one. You can just do it ,which is the route that I came. And so ethics and morality and the kind of New York Times set of rules about what you can and can't do and the guidelines that you receive there wasn't a part of my background. I came to it more as a citizen and as a person than a photographer. So my thoughts about interceding and not interceding ? whether it was characters or a photographer ? were unformed and they became formed. And what I stuck to was really, why does it matter if you intercede to save somebody or not? And I did, on many occasions, attempt and sometimes succeed and sometimes not. It's a very strange thing. It varies from day to day with what you're thinking and what you're feeling and what the situation is. To intercede, to change the picture, is unethical. To intercede at the cost of doing your job as a journalist, I think that's a personal choice you make. And I have no issue with people on the other side of that divide."

"Somehow the camera gives us access to the most intimate moments in peoples' lives. And you do feel out of place when you're photographing a mother cradling a dead son or whatever the case may be. Or a young Marine helping an injured friend ? you do feel like you're somewhat out of place. But at the same time, you know that it's important to do it. It's what you're doing there. Otherwise, stay home and hang out with your PlayStation. ... You gotta learn to live with yourself and what you do. When you take pictures ? and these are extreme situations ? you are intruding. You're very fortunate to be able to record somebody else's history. I've always maintained that the true heroes are the people around me. ... I always understand that it's the history that I'm documenting ? that's the whole point of being there."

"The other thing that photographers struggle with is the setting up of pictures. And by that, I mean, where the photographer interferes in the scene to make it a better picture ? where essentially fiction and nonfiction blur ? that we have real problems with. I remember a very famous New York-based photographer was at the funeral of Chris Hani, the communist leader who was assassinated by white extremists. He was directing the show to make for a better picture, and we all immediately wrote to his employer ? his contract employer at the time was Time magazine ? and he was pulled off the job immediately. And this other photographer we spoke about ? the right-winger ? he would hire a Mercedes-Benz and drive into the township and drive up and down the volatile areas until people started stoning his cars so that he could get the pictures."

"I didn't try and get it published. At the time I was freelancing, and I was shooting for the AP and also for Sigma, the photo agency. And so I had two separate cameras. One had color negative for AP and one had color slide for Sigma. And the AP put the pictures up. They put up 18 pictures in all. And newspapers complained about the graphic nature of those pictures, and many didn't publish those pictures. It wasn't that the 'burning man' wasn't widely published at all ? certainly not in South America and not in America, and I can understand that; they are very disturbing pictures, and that's up for a newspaper to decide what they want to publish ? but the tangential argument from that is that it's not up to us as photographers to censor that. It's not up to us to not shoot it because it's too graphic or too disturbing. It's not up to us to not edit that and put that in the take, and it's certainly not up to the distributing agency to decline to put those pictures in the take because of their graphic nature. In fact, it was the New York office of the AP that almost didn't want to move those pictures on. Because London had taken them in ... and in New York, it was difficult. They almost didn't move the picture."

'Not a picture,' I muttered as I looked through my camera viewfinder at the soldier firing methodically into the hostel. I turned back towards the line of terrified, unwilling and poorly-trained soldiers taking cover alongside the wall next to me. Their eyes darted back and forth under the rims of their steel helmets. I wanted to capture that fear. The next minute, a blow struck me ? massive, hammer-like ? in the chest. I missed a sub-moment, a beat from my life, and then I found myself on the ground, entangled in the legs of the other photographers working beside me. Pain irradiated my left breast and spread through my torso. It went far beyond the point I imagined pain ended. 'Fuck! I'm hit, I'm hit! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!'
As automatic fire continued to erupt from along the wall, Joao and Jim desperately dragged me by my camera vest closer to the wall, seeking shelter next to the soldiers and out of their line of fire. Then an anguished voice broke through the cacophony: 'Ken O is hit!' I struggled to turn my head through the tangled cameras and straps around my neck. A few yards to the right, I could see a pair of long skinny legs that were unmistakably Ken's protruding from the weeds flourishing against the concrete wall. They were motionless and at an improbable angle to each other. Jim ran over to where Gary was clutching Ken, trying to find a sign of life. The sporadic crack and rattle of high-velocity automatic gunfire reverberated through the air around the huddle of journalists and soldiers trying to flatten themselves against the wall. Blood seeped from the gaping hole in my T-shirt. I clamped my hand over the hole to stop the bleeding. I imagined the exit wound of the bullet as a deadly, gaping hole in my back. 'Look for an exit wound,' I said to Joao. He ignored me. 'You'll be OK,' he said. I reasoned that it must be bad if he didn't want to look, and as though this was all happening in some feeble movie, I asked him to give a message to my girlfriend. 'Tell Heidi I'm sorry . . . that I love her,' I said. 'Tell her yourself,' he snapped back.
Suddenly a sensation of utter calm washed over me. This was it. I had paid my dues. I had atoned for the dozens of close calls that always left someone else injured or dead, while I emerged from the scenes of mayhem unscathed, pictures in hand, having committed the crime of being the lucky voyeur.
Jim returned, crouching under the gunfire and murmured softly in my ear, 'Ken's gone, but you'll be OK.' Joao heard and stood up to rush over to Ken, but others were already helping him. He lifted his camera. 'Ken will want to see these later,' he told himself. He was annoyed that Ken's hair was in his face, ruining the picture. Joao took pictures of us both ? two of his closest friends ? me sprawled on the cracked concrete clutching my chest; Ken being clumsily manhandled into the back of an armoured vehicle by Gary and a soldier, his head lolling freely like that of a rag doll and his cameras dangling uselessly from his neck. Then it was my turn to be loaded into the armoured car; Jim had my shoulders and Joao my legs, but I am large, and Heidi's pampering had added more kilos. 'You're too fat, man!' Joao joked. 'I can walk,' I protested, trying to laugh, but strangely indignant. I wanted to remind them of the weight of the cameras.
After four long years of observing the violence, the bullets had finally caught up with us. The bang-bang had been good to us, until now. Earlier that morning we had been working the back streets and alleys of Thokoza township's devastated no-man's-land that we ? Ken Oosterbroek, Kevin Carter, Joao and I ? had become so familiar with over the years of chasing confrontations between police, soldiers, modern-day Zulu warriors and Kalashnikov-toting youngsters as apartheid came to its bloody end.
Kevin was not with us when the shooting happened. He had left Thokoza to talk to a local journalist about the Pulitzer Prize he had won for his shocking picture of a starving child being stalked by a vulture in the Sudan. He had been in two minds about leaving. Joao had advised him to stay, that despite there being a lull, things were sure to cook again. But Kevin was enjoying his new-found status as a celebrity and went anyway.
Over a steak lunch in Johannesburg, Kevin recounted his many narrow escapes. After dessert, he told the journalist that there had been a lot of bang-bang that morning in Thokoza, and that he had to return. While driving back to the township, some 16 kilometres from Johannesburg, he heard on a news report on the radio that Ken and I had been shot, and that Ken was dead. He raced towards the local hospital we had been taken to. Kevin hardly ever wore body armour, none of us did, and Joao flatly refused to. But at the entrance to the township, before reaching the hospital, Kevin dragged his bullet-proof vest over his head. All at once, he felt fear.
The boys were no longer untouchable, and, before the bloodstains faded from the concrete beside the wall, another of us would be dead.

The Nielsen Company released its monthly survey of U.S. smartphone consumers today to reveal a change in the playing field: Android is now the most desired OS in America.
The survey of consumers planning on buying a smartphone in the next year, conducted from January through March of 2011, reveals that 31 percent of those surveyed plan on purchasing an Android device, up from the 26 percent counted in the July-August 2010 survey. This overtakes Apple’s iOS as the weapon of choice, which 30 percent of those surveyed plan on buying, down from 31 percent last summer. [Nielsen]

Lohan Heading To Jail For Probation Violation

Lindsay Lohan has been sentenced to 120 days in jail for violating her probation.
The Mean Girls star, who is on probation for a 2007 DUI charge, is facing trial over allegations she stole a necklace from California jewellery store Kamofie & Co. in January. She was subsequently charged with felony theft.
Lohan appeared in a Los Angeles court for a preliminary hearing on Friday, when Judge Stephanie Sautner reduced the count to a misdemeanour.
However, she decided the accusation amounted to a parole violation and ordered Lohan to serve 120 days behind bars.
The actress was remanded in custody for booking immediately after the ruling and will check into Lynwood Correctional Facility late on Friday.
But Lohan is not expected to spend the whole night in jail - her lawyer, Shawn Holley, is planning to appeal the case and the star is expected to post bail soon after she is processed.
Lohan has also been ordered to complete 480 hours of community service, split between a women's shelter and the Los Angeles County morgue, according to TMZ.com.
Friday's hearing also saw potential witnesses, including police detectives and jewellery store owner Sofia Kaman, give testimonies.
Deputy District Attorney Danette Meyers presented surveillance footage from the store on the day of the alleged crime and argued Lohan appeared to intentionally take the necklace, using her friend Patrick as a distraction.
Judge Sautner agreed after viewing the footage for the first time, saying, "I see the intent here. I see a level of brazenness with, 'Let me see what I can get away with here.'"
Holley filed a motion for complete dismissal of the case, but the request was rejected.
Lohan will return to court on 11 May for a pretrial hearing and the trial will kick off on 3 June.
