Thomas Lawrence, 35, president of Lawrence Technology Services of Taylor, has been working full time with computers since 1996. ?Computers have always been a passion ever since I had my first Tandy computer from Radio Shack in the mid-?80s,? he said. ?Back then, they didn?t come with much software and you had to write your own programs to run on them. I have been hooked on them ever since.? (Photo by E.L. Conley)
TAYLOR ? Loading updates as they become available is an integral part of keeping your computer protected, according to Thomas Lawrence, president of Lawrence Technology Services, a business he started in 2003.
?Most of the updates that are released fix security holes,? he said. ?Malware writers rely on people not loading these updates. All of the computers that come through our store get the latest updates when we service them.
?Most people use the computer to check their bank accounts, pay the bills and do their shopping. Spyware and virus writers looking for your information are out there and determined. We offer free in-store checkups to confirm that your computer is safe to use.?
Open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, the computer company offers service and repair for business and home computers.
Other services include network setup, server installations, sales of new and used computers, website design, computer backup systems for homes and businesses, email and Web hosting.

When it comes to services, the most-popular customer request is virus removal and fixing general problems with Windows (software) accounts.
?Many people have a friend or relative who as they say ?knows computers,?? Lawrence said. ?This often means they may know more than them, but it does not mean they know how to fix the problem.
?We often get the computers after these friends have given it a go and failed to fix it. A customer?s best chance is having us rescue their computer and all the important information they may have. Sometimes their helpful friends end up erasing the data in their attempt to fix the issues. Continued...
?The businesses we service have a much broader array of problems. Computers have become such an integral part of day-to-day operations at companies that when they stop, business stops. We are very fast to get them up and running by both remote support and or onsite service.?
With a sluggish economy, Lawrence and his staff are getting more repair requests because consumers can?t afford to go out and buy a new system.
?We are very reasonable and fast for laptop repairs,? he said. ?Most people don?t realize seemingly disastrous problems such as a broken screen can be fixed for as little as $140. Larger retail stores charge as much as $300 for the same repair. The economy has people being (savvier) where they shop, and that has been great for us.?
Along with computer repairs, Lawrence and his staff help individuals and companies design websites. They have designed small sites for baseball teams to large custom Web programming projects.
?Over the years as we have grown and taken on new clients, we have focused a lot on how we manage information and keeping our processes streamlined and efficient,? he said.
Some of Lawrence?s current accounts include the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber, Matador Restaurant, TDK Financial, Indian Lanes bar and bowling center and Paris Productions photography.
?We have spent a lot of time developing our own in-house point of sale and customer management system,? he said. ?It allows us to keep very close track of all of our business clients? information and work history. When we receive a call from one of our business clients, we can pull up their work history and related network information very fast. We use the same system for our retail clients so we can get their systems checked right in and on the bench then back in their hands in no time.?
Lawrence credits the launching of the Internet as a positive impact on his business.
?It has allowed us to expand our business far outside just the Downriver area,? he said. ?Doing Web design and programming work has no borders or state lines. Facebook has also allowed us to connect with our customers directly and with a more personal touch. We respond to customers via Facebook and email both before and after hours.?
In the future, Lawrence wants to open more locations and expand the number of businesses his company services. Continued...
