Gurgaon, October 24
The state government?s project of providing low-cost and affordable houses to the low- and medium-income residents has failed to take off. As per the plan of the Town and Country Planning Department, the selling price of flats in low-cost housing projects was not to exceed Rs 4 lakh. The cost of dwelling units under the affordable housing category was not to exceed Rs 16 lakh in the Gurgaon-Manesar Complex (high-potential zone), Rs 14 lakh in Panchkula (Periphery Controlled Area) and Faridabad-Ballabhgarh belt (medium-potential zone) and Rs 12.5 lakh in the rest of Haryana (low-potential zone).

The project, aimed at providing affordable dwelling units to people from the low and middle income categories, was supposed to be completed within three years, but has not yet taken off.

The Gurgaon Citizens Council (GCC), a consortium of local residents? associations, has questioned the progress of the project and raised apprehension that certain builders who had taken licences to construct such dwelling units had usurped the land meant for the purpose in connivance with government officials.

In a letter written to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the GCC has sought information on details like the land earmarked for the purpose, builders who had taken licences to construct the houses and how many dwelling units had been constructed/handed over to the eligible residents. Copies of the letter have been marked to Congress MP from Gurgaon Rao Inderjit Singh, local MLAs Sukhbir Kataria and Rao Dharampal, the Haryana Chief Secretary, top bosses of the TCP Department and other senior government functionaries.
